OSU wrestlers win three at Texas Duals

ARLINGTON, Texas - Oregon State won all three of its meets Saturday at the Texas Duals wrestling tournament. The 14th-ranked Beavers beat Northern Iowa 24-19, edged Wisconsin 19-18 and thumped Virginia 30-14 to run their dual meet win streak to four.
"We progressed as the matches went on," OSU head coach Joe Wells said of the Beavers (6-3 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10). "We did more, we wrestled harder and opened up more. Part of it was gettng started again ... our conditioning looked good for having as much time off as we did. We just stood around a lot in the first meet, got going more in the second meet, and by the third meet our intensity was good."
Sixth-ranked heavyweight Mat Orndorff recorded two first-period pins and a technical fall for OSU, improving his record to 14-3 with a team-high nine pins.
"He had a good day for us," Wells said of Orndorff. "He just went out and took it to them."
However, top-ranked 149-pounder Oscar Wood of Oregon State suffered his first loss of the season when he was upset by Wisconsins Dusty Coufal 6-3.
"The kid he was wrestling against was being really evasive - he kind of hit-and-run a lot," Wells said. "Oscar chased and chased and chased and got in trouble a couple of times. It was just a good opportunity for him to learn and improve, and to realize thta hes goint to have to deal with those kind of tactics."
Wood then pinned Virginias John Pozniak, improving his record to 14-1 this season with eight pins.
Wells also praised the efforts of OSU 133-pounder Ben Richards and 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen. Richards was 3-0, gaining one win by forfeit and then recording a technical fall and a major decision to improve to 12-3 this season. Jorgensen went 2-1 with one pin and is now 13-6 this season.
Oregon States next competition will be this coming Friday and Saturday when the Beavers travel to the 16-team Virginia Duals.
