OSU women fall in overtime
October 16, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State scored first but Washington State scored last as the Beavers lost 2-1 in overtime in Pacific-10 womens soccer Friday afternoon on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium. The Beavers (5-6-1 overall, 0-2-0 Pacific-10) were beaten when Deka DeWitt scored in the 118th minute for Washington State (4-7-2, 2-1-0).
OSU continues its weekend homestand against Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m., while Washington State will be at Oregon.
Oregon State had taken a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute on a goal by Lindy Brown, and the Beavers stayed in front well into the second half.
"Weve gone out and given a good account of ourselves again," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We played very well, but we continue to struggle in scoring a bit. Its cliche, but games are won by the team that scores."
Browns goal was the 18th of her career, lifting her into a tie for fifth place on OSUs all-time leaders list. She scored on a header from five yards out after taking a pass from Allison Hamada on the right side.
Those chances are something Fennah wants to see more of.
"As much as anything else, we dont commit to getting behind the defenders," Fennah said. "We play in front of them, and we dont find the holes behind them. We just dont threaten to score often enough."
Washington State had tied the score in the 61st minute on a goal by Natalie Kehl. DeWitt had gained control of the ball on the goal line to the left of the net and scooted it past Beaver goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease to Kehl, who tapped it in.
OSU nearly regained the lead in the 72nd minute, but Ann Marie Fallows line drive from the left side hit the crossbar.
"We were unlucky to see that ball come back off the crossbar," Fennah said. "And we had a couple that slid just past the post."
The deciding goal came when Amy Chippendale moved a short ball ahead to DeWitt, who pushed it into the lower right corner of the net.
