Beavers fade in baseball loss
April 13, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State gave up seven runs in the final two innings Tuesday afternoon as the Beavers fell to Washington 14-5 in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (12-25 overall, 1-8 Pacific-10) and Washington (20-12, 7-5) finish their series at 3 p.m. Wednesday; the teams will play their Pacific-10 counting series April 23-25 in Seattle.
"Theres no question that Im frustrated, and were frustrated as a team," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "Games are won and lost with pitching and defense, and right now were not doing the job in either area. We have done a good job of getting much better at the plate, but were just not getting pitching and defense right now."
Oregon State was within 7-5 until the Huskies scored five times in the top of the eighth inning, and a pair of Beaver errors made three of the runs unearned. Bryan Williamsons two-run double and Matt Hollods two-run homer were the key hits in the inning.
Trailing 3-0 in the second inning, OSU got a solo homer from Rod Gott in the bottom of the second, then Bryan Ingram tripled to start the third inning and scored on a squeeze bunt by Eric Stark to make it 3-2. After the Huskies went up 7-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning, the Beavers came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth with Ingram driving in one of the runs with a single.
Ingram tied his career high with three hits, going 3-for-5. Gott and Curtis Davis were both 2-for-5, and Stark was 2-for-3 for the Beavers.
Don Stykel took the pitching loss, starting and going six innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks while striking out four. Jed Mitchell turned in a strong relief performance for OSU, entering the game with a runner at second and none out in the top of the seventh inning and getting a flyout and a pair of strikeouts.
"Don threw well," Casey said. "He could have been in a situation where he came out in the seventh inning with the lead but there were some runs we created by not making catches. Jed came in in a situation where we needed someone to get people out, and he did it."
Afterward, Casey said the Beavers had talked about attitude.
"You cant control your ability, but you can control your attitude," Casey said. "If you take the field thinking things are going bad, theyll continue to go bad. If you take the attitude that what can go wrong, will, its going to continue to happen.
"Until you believe in yourselves, until you believe you can make the plays, make the pitches and hit the ball, it makes for a long game."
