Softball Defeats San Jose State in Season Opener
February 6, 1999
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Tarrah Beyster struck out eight batters and had the game-winning hit as the Oregon State softball team posted a 7-2 win over San Jose State in the Beavers' season-opener Saturday at the Spartan Early Bird Tournament.
The Beavers trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning, and Beyster came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. The junior All-American ripped her only hit of the day, a single to centerfield, to drive in Brooke Rutschman and Shawna Feldt and give OSU the lead.
OSU added two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. San Jose State, which managed just three hits off Beyster, scored its only two runs in the fourth inning.
"It was a good win for the first game of the season," said coach Kirk Walker. "We hit the ball well at times and had good balance throughout the lineup. Everyone contributed, one through nine."
Jodi Chmielewski had three hits for OSU, and Rutschman was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. Heather Chinn also had two hits as the Beavers picked up 10 hits on the day.
Chmielewski's three hits pushed her career total to 152, moving her into second place on OSUs career hits list. She becomes just the third Beaver to collect 150 hits in her career, and she needs nine more to tie the school record.
Beyster also moved closer to breaking OSUs career RBI record. With two in the win over the Spartans, Beyster now has 66 career RBI, just one shy of tying the school record.
Beyster will have to wait until Sunday to try to break the record; OSUs game with Pacific that was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon was rained out and will not be made up.
OSU is scheduled to play Pacific at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a noon contest with San Jose State to round out the Beavers action in the tournament.
Pacific defeated San Jose State, 9-0, in the tournament's second game before rain forced the cancellation of the third game of the day.
