Two Beavers picked in baseball draft
June 3, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pitcher B.R. Cook and shortstop Troy Schader were selected in the 1999 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft that was held Wednesday and Thursday. Cook was taken in the third round by the St. Louis Cardinals and Schader was selected in the 21st round by the San Diego Padres.
Cook, a junior righthander from Salem, Ore. (Sprague HS), was the 102nd pick overall. He was 6-9 this season with a 5.44 earned run average and earned All-Pacific-10 honorable mention. Cook was the highest draft pick out of Oregon State since pitcher Mike Thurman was taken as a supplemental pick in the first round in 1994.
Schader, a senior from La Center, Wash. (La Center HS/Green River CC), was the 652nd pick overall. He batted .237 with nine home runs and 33 runs batted in this spring.
Cook and Schader were the only Beavers selected during the draft, which included 50 rounds.
