Softball Drops Two Games to No. 19 California
May 8, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 11 Oregon State softball team dropped both games of a Pacific-10 doubleheader with No. 19 California on Saturday afternoon. Cal won the opener, 8-6, in eight innings and posted a 1-0 victory in game two.
Things looked like it was going to be all California (40-19, 9-14 Pac-10) early on in the first game after the Bears scored three runs on four hits in the second inning. Cal added another run in the fourth inning before Oregon State (41-22, 11-13) had even gotten its first hit of the game.
The Beavers finally struck in the bottom of the fourth when Shawna Feldt started things off with a walk. Brooke Rutschman and Jodi Chmielewski had back-to-back hits to send Feldt across the plate for OSUs first run. The Bears then intentionally walked Tarrah Beyster to load the bases, and Jenni Jodoin drove in Rutschman with a sacrifice fly to left field. When the dust finally settled, the Beavers had tied the game up with four runs on four hits in the inning.
Cal added a run when Maiko Bristow scored in the seventh, but the Beavers quickly tied it up again in the bottom half of the frame. Heather Chinn led off with a double and went to third when Feldt grounded out to first. Chinn scored on Rutschmans game-tying single.
The Bears' offense took off in the eighth inning when Kirsten Drake started things off with a single, and Candace Harper homered to left center field to give Cal a two-run advantage. Katie May followed that up with a single, and Pauline Duenas came in as a pinch runner and later scored.
Jodoin was poised to start a Beaver rally, leading off the bottom of the eighth with a double. After Kelli Kranz struck out, Amy Borbiro lifted a pinch hit single to score Jodoin, but Parisa Plant grounded into a double play to end the game.
The only run in game two came off a home run by Amber Phillips in the fifth. Neither team had much offense after combining for 22 hits in the opener. Cal had four hits and OSU had five in game two.
Of OSU's 14 hits on the afternoon, four were doubles. That lifts the season total to 54, which broke the school record of 51 in 1997. Jodoin, Chinn, Kranz and Feldt each had one on Saturday.
Crystal Draper took both losses for OSU and dropped to 16-12 on the year. Draper pitched the complete game in the nightcap and threw two innings of relief ball in the opening contest. She struck out six batters for the day. Tarrah Beyster pitched six innings with nine hits and five strikeouts before Draper relieved her in the first game.
Nicole DiSalvio (14-10) made two relief appearances for Cal and picked up the win in the opener and the save in game two. Jocelyn Forest (19-6) started both games and was credited with the win in the second game.
