Student-Athletes Honored for Academic/Athletic Achievements

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State has named four student-athletes to honor for their excellent work in academics and athletics for the month of March, it was announced Thursday by Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart.
Each month, OSU honors four student-athletes, a male and female each month for academic achievement and a male and female student-athlete for athletic achievement.
The academic winners for the month of March include Tarrah Beyster from softball and Paul Hansen from baseball.. The athletic winners for March include Megan Murphy-Barcroft, gymnastics, and Mat Orndorff, wrestling.
Beyster, a junior from Chula Vista High School in San Diego, CA, has enjoyed great success on the field as well as in the class room. Beyster earned the women's academic honor for March with a 3.61 GPA in psychology. Hansen, a sophomore from Jesuit High School in Portland, earned the men's academic honor for March with a 3.58 overall GPA in business.
Athletically, Murphy-Barcroft, a senior from Palo Cedro, CA, had a fantastic month of March. She was crowned Pac-10 champion on beam and was co-champion on vault. She scored a 9.95 on beam at the conference meet to become the third OSU gymnast to win the Pac-10 title on the event. She also scored a 9.925 on vault to become the second Beaver to win the league title on that event.
She place second in the Pac-10 in all-around with a career best 39.625, the third best score in OSU history. She was named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week on March 16 after leading OSU to a win over No. 3 Utah. She scored 9.925 or better on three events en route to the victory over the Utes.
Orndorff, a senior from Kent-Meridian High School in Kent, WA, completed his OSU wrestling career by placing fourth in the NCAA championships at heavyweight to earn All-America honors. Mat had 94 wins during his OSU career. He placed second at the Pac-10 championships. Orndorff was also selected as a member of the 1999 National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America squad in March.
