Men's Intercollegiate Sports Summary

The following is a brief summary of all of the Oregon State University men's intercollegiate programs:
BASEBALL
*Finished the season 35-14-1, and second in the Pac-10 North (15-9).
*Placed second in Pac-10 Conferences Northern Division.
*Ranked as high as 19th in the country during the season.
*Posted a 10-game winning streak during the season, the longest since 1986.
*OSU pitchers earned conference Pitcher of the Week nine of 13 times this season.
*Program won its 1,600th game this season.
*Team swept a three-game series from No. 10-ranked Arizona, and won a total of seven of nine games against the Pac-10 Southern Division.
*Went 3-0 at the Florida Marlins Invitational earlier in the year.
*Team played its toughest schedule in the 89-year history of the program.
*Andrew Checketts was 11-1 with a 3.77 ERA on the mound, and was named to two All-American teams.
*Ben Bertrand second team Academic All-American, and first team All-District.
*Four student-athletes named to All-Pac-10 Northern Division team.
*Team had four 1,000-plus home crowds, and will likely finish in the top-50 nationally for attendance.
BASKETBALL
*Team finished 13-17 overall, and 3-15 in the Pac-10 Conference (tie-9th).
*The 13 wins are the most for the program since 1993.
*Champions of the Hawaii-Hilo Holiday Shootout.
*Team opened the season 9-2, the best start since 1994-85.
*Corey Benjamin earned Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention acclaim.
*Deaundra Tanner earned Pac-10 Conference All-Freshmen Team honors.
*Team finished on the plus side for rebounding for the first time since 1985.
*Team improved in nearly every major statistical category within the conference, compared to previous seasons.
CREW
*Varsity Eight finished ninth at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic.
*Novice Eight captured fourth at the San Diego Crew Classic.
*Program competed in its fourth consecutive Intercollegiate Rowing Championshipship, placing 15th.
*Program placed third at the Pac-10 Conference Championships.
*Andy Legard and Jayme Dumford named All-Pac-10.
FOOTBALL
*Team finished 3-8 overall, and 0-8 in Pac-10 Conference.
*Team won all of its non-conference games for the first time since 1957.
*Five players earned Pac-10 Conference Academic achievement honors, including Nathan McAtee for the third time.
*Inoke Breckterfield named honorable mention All-American and second team All-Pac-10.
*DeShawn Williams earns Pac-10 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for Sept. 20.
*Four Beavers earn Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention acclaim.
*Terrance Carroll named to The Sporting News Second Team Freshmen All-American Team
GOLF
*Team placed in the top 10 in eight of 12 tournaments this season.
*Team captured Oregon Duck Invitational team title.
*Anthony Arvidson won the Duck Invitational.
*OSU individuals finished in the top 10 of various tournaments six times.
*Chris Janson and Anthony Arvidson named to Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention Team.
SOCCER
*Program poasted a 4-12-2 record overall, and 1-2-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
*Jimmy Conway is the only coach in the 10-year history of program.
*Freddy Kummernes named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Division Team.
*Goalkeeper Bryan Hill set a school record for single-season saves.
*Tied No. 10 ranked Stanford.
*Program plays at newly-finished Lorenz Field.
WRESTLING
*Team was 9-9 overall, 4-4 in Pac-10 Conference (2nd).
*Team finished tied for ninth at NCAA Championships, its fourth top-10 finish in five years.
*Oscar Wood and Jason Buce earned All-American honors.
*Team finished second at Pac-10 Championships.
*Eight individuals competed in NCAA Championships, tied for the most in the Pac-10.
*Assistant Coach Les Gutches is a World Champion and 1996 Olympian.
*Team was ranked as high as No. 18 during the course of the season.
*Program is only one of two in the NCAA to have at least 800 dual meet victories.
*1997-98 produced two of the four biggest home crowds during this decade.
*Head Coach Joe Wells was named the Oregon Wrestling Classic Man of the Year.
