OSU women lose to No. 18 Colorado State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State couldnt overcome a rough first half Monday night as the Beavers were beaten by 18th-ranked Colorado State 79-61 in non-league womens basketball in Gill Coliseum. Katie Cronin had 25 points for the unbeaten Rams (5-0 overall) and Becky Hammon added 18 points.
The Beavers (1-1 overall), who were led by Sissel Pierces 16 points and Chassie Wiersmas 15, will play host to the Gazette-Times Classic this weekend. OSU opens against Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. Friday after Cal-Irvine and Ohio University meet in the other first round game at 5 p.m. The tournament concludes with games at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
Against Colorado State, the Beavers turned the ball over 22 times in the first half as they fell behind 44-20 at intermission. OSU cut its turnovers to 11 in the second half and outscored the Rams by six points after the break, but could get no closer than 14 points.
CSU scored the games first six points, then quickly pushed its lead to 15-4 just over five minutes into the game. Cronin had eight points and Shannon Randles five during that opening outburst.
Oregon State managed to get back within eight several times in the first half, the latest on a layup by Pierce that made it 20-12 with 10:28 left in the first half. But Hammon quickly came back to hit a layup of her own that started a 20-4 run, eventually giving the Rams a 40-16 lead with 2:28 left in the half.
