OSU rally falls short in baseball loss
March 1, 1999
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Oregon States rally in the final two innings fell short Sunday afternoon and the Beavers fell to Santa Clara 12-9 in non-league baseball at Buck Shaw Stadium. OSU (7-9 overall) finishes its weekend trip to the Bay Area with a game at San Jose State at 1 p.m. Monday.
The Beavers trailed Santa Clara (6-9) 11-4 going into the eighth inning on Sunday, but drew closer on a two-run homer to center field by Joe Gerber. The Broncos then extended their lead to 12-6 with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
But the Beavers managed to push across three runs in the top of the ninth on a run-scoring single by Rod Gott and a two-run single by Troy Schader. OSU eventually managed to get the tying run on base with two out, but reliever A.J. Ampi got Josh Carter to fly out to end the game; it was Ampis third save of the series.
Gerber made his first pitching appearance of the season and took the loss, but was 3-for-5 at the plate with a homer, a double and four runs batted in. Drew Hedges was also 3-for-5 and Schader was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.
