Men's Golf Sixth after Two Rounds
September 28, 1998
Port Orchard, Wash. - The Oregon State mens golf team shot a 36-hole total of 741 and in sixth place with one round remaining of the Husky Invitational at the Gold Mountain Country Club.
The tournament is rare in that six players make up a team with the five best rounds counting toward the overall score. In most regular season collegiate tournaments the teams are made up of five individuals with the four best rounds counting toward the team total.
Oregon State was forced to play just five players in the first round after Justin Johnson became ill and was unable to participate. Beaver Head Coach Mike Ketcham was able fly Anthony Arvidson to Seattle in time for the second round in the afternoon.
"To say the least, it was quite an eventful day," Ketcham said. "I thought through all of this we played pretty well. The team showed a lot of character when we played just five players in the first round, knowing that the pressure was on each one of them."
John Lepak leads the Beaver cause, tied for 16th heading into the final round. Lepak shot rounds of 3-over-75 and 1-under-71 for a 146 total. He is just five shots off the lead which is shared by Luke Donald and Josh Habig of Northwestern.
Other Oregon State scores include Dustin Wayne tied for 21st at 147; Eric Dahm and Kyle Hudson are tied for 27th at 149; and Anthony Arvidson, without the luxury of seeing the course before, shot a second round 76. Waynes score included a tournament opening 70.
"We didnt play our best today, but there were some bright spots," Ketcham added. "The final round has been our best in every tournament so far this season, and have no doubts we can make that happen again here. We should have all our eggs in one basket for the final round."
Northwestern holds the team lead at 726, with Oregon and BYU tied for second at 729.
