OSU in second Place after two days of Speedo Cup

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Oregon States Erica Stephens won the 400-yard individual medley and Kristen Martinec tied for first in the 100 butterfly Friday to help guide the Beavers to second place after two days of the three-day Speedo Cup womens swimming meet. They trail team leader Brigham Young going into Sundays final swims out of a field of over twenty teams.
"Our day was fantastic," said OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny. "We had a lot of swimmers in the finals. The kids really swam well; they stepped up and did the job.
"We had a great day yesterday, things were going great. On the second day things can settle down. You need to step up and do well, and they did an incredible job. We threw enough pressure on them, we talked about points and racing against teams in the stands that we were fighting."
Martinecs time of 57.20 seconds in the 100 butterfly set a new school record. She broke the old mark of 58.03, previously held by current Beaver swimmer Melissa Hsieh, which was set last season. Martinec also broke into the schools top ten times for the 200 freestyle with a one minute, 57.01 seconds mark, good enough for eighth on the list.
OSU freshman Sheila Tehranchi had a great showing in the 100 breaststroke, as her time of 1:07.89 not only put her tenth place for the meet, but also sixth place on the Beaver all-time list.
"Our freshmen stepped up incredibly," Podkoscielny said. "Overall its been a big, big team effort."
Stephens, Martinec, and Tehranchi teamed up with Arianna Higuera to finish third in the 200 medley with a time of 1:50.20.
