Women's Golf Team Second at Hawaii
November 4, 1998
Corvallis, Ore. - Kathleen Takaishi shot a school record 54-hole total of 213 to help the No. 20 Oregon State womens golf team to a second place finish at the 18-team Princeville Wahine Invitational at the Princeville Makai Golf Club. The event marked the fall season finale for the Beavers.
Takaishi opened the tournament with a school record matching 69, and followed with rounds of 73 and 71. Her 213 total was four shots better than the school record set by her teammate Anjeanette Dabbs last month at the Northwest Invitational.
As a team the Beavers fired a school record 884 for the 54 holes, including a school best 289 in the final round. Oregon State finished the tournament at 20-over-par, nine shots back of team champion No. 14 Oklahoma State.
"It would be hard to ask for the fall season to end any better than this," Beaver assistant coach Charles Kingsbaker said. "We finished in front of several teams in our district, which is very beneficial as we look toward postseason."
The Beavers Andrea Hehn tied for third with an even-par 216 total, one shot better than the old school record. Her best round for the tournament came in the opening 18 with a 2-under 70. Dabbs tied for 22nd at 226, Rachel Borcherts tied for 37th at 231, and Erin Borcherts tied for 78th at 241.
Angie Yoon of Nevada captured the individual title at 4-under-212. Yoon shot a tournament best 68 in the second round.
"The way we played here has everyone anxious for the spring season," Kingsbaker added. "This team has a lot of ability -- it should be a fun spring."
Oregon State concluded its six-tournament fall season finishing in the top four four times, including winning the season opener at Texas Tech. The spring season begins Feb. 22-24 at the Ping Arizona Invitational in Tucson.
