September 15, 1998
Lubbock, Texas - Lubbock, Texas - For the second straight season the Oregon State University womens golf team won its season opener, capturing the Jeannine McHaney Memorial at the Lubbock Country Club.
The Beavers shot a final round 309 and finished with a 906 total. Oregon State, ranked No. 22 in the nation, won the tournament by 12 shots over No. 8 TCU.
"The course played more difficult today than it did yesterday, and that explains the high scores," OSU Head Coach Rise Lakowske said. "We had to deal with a strong wind and difficult pin placements today. We made a few mental errors today, but not enough that it cost us the team title. Overall, we played very well, and its terrific to open the season with a victory."
Kathleen Takaishi paced Oregon State finishing with a 54-hole total of 6-over-par 222. Takaishi entered the final round with back-to-back rounds of 72, but shot 78 Tuesday and finished three shots back of Texas Techs Brooke Lowrance. The second place showing earned Takaishi her 12th top-10 finish in her career at OSU.
"I was pretty disappointed the way I played today," Takaishi said. "Its not that I played really bad, but I made two bad shots that resulted in double bogeys (par 3 fifth and par 4 ninth). But, Im happy the team won. Thats great."
Other Oregon State scores include Rachel Borcherts fourth at 224; Anjeanette Dabbs tied for fifth at 225; Andrea Hehn was 15th at 235; and Reena Eklund was 38th at 256. Borcherts shot the teams best round of the day, firing a 3-over-par 75.
The Beavers return to action Oct. 5-7 at the NCAA Fall Preview in Tulsa, Okla.
