Football Signs JC All-American Tackle
Mar. 2, 1998
CORVALLIS--Oregon State added a huge bonus to its 1998 football recruiting list with the addition of 6-5, 315-pound offensive tackle Jason White, an junior college All-American from Diablo Valley College, to a national letter of intent, it was announced Monday by Beaver head coach Mike Riley.
White is a real signing bonus for OSU and his addition gives the Beavers a total of 22 players who have signed national football letters of intent in 1998.
White originally signed a letter of intent in the early junior college signing period in December to attend Michigan State University. However, White did not earn his AA degree from Diablo Valley following fall quarter and, therefore, his letter became invalid and he was once again a recruitable athlete
Jason was named first-team junior college All-American by PrepStar Magazine following his sophomore season, at Diablo Valley College, located in Pleasant Hill, CA, and one of PrepStar's top 100 junior college players in the country.
SuperPrep Magazine named him the 54th best junior college player in the country.
He played football at Diablo Valley for coach Ralph Depew and offensive line coach Pete Steffen, a former two-year letterman on the offensive line at Oregon State under Dave Kragthorpe (1988-89). He earned first-team all-conference (Northern California Football Conference) honors as a freshman and sophomore. He was team captain and team MVP as a sophomore.
"He has very quick feet and he was a real rock for us at left tackle," said Depew. "As good as he was for us, I think he has a tremendous future ahead of him at Oregon State. He has not come close to reaching his potential and with his size and quickness, his upside is unlimited."
White also visited Michigan State, Indiana, Pittsburgh and UNLV in addition to Oregon State, plus he was also recruited by Oregon, Hawaii, Kansas State and San Jose State.
The addition of White completes OSU's recruiting for 1998. The Beavers signed a total of eight junior college players and 14 high school players.
Jason will report to OSU for the start of fall camp in August.
