OSU's win streak ends in women's basketball
January 2, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon States seven-game win streak came to an end Saturday night as the Beavers lost to Stanford 83-63 in Pacific-10 womens basketball at Gill Coliseum. The game was the conference opener for both teams; OSU (8-2 overall, 0-1 Pac-1) now plays host to California at 7 p.m. Monday.
Against Stanford (5-7, 1-0), Oregon State found itself in early foul trouble and the bigger Cardinal capitalized. Beaver center Sissel Pierce picked up her second foul just over a minute into the game and wound up playing only 12 minutes and scoring two points, well below her average of 13.1 points per game.
Pierces absence opened the way for Stanford to score inside. Bethany Donaphin, a 6-foot-2 freshman making her first start for the Cardinal, went 8-for-11 from the field on the way to a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds. Carolyn Moos, a 6-6 sophomore, added 13 points while guard Christina Batastini came off the bench to score 14 points.
Forward Tammy Arnold had 13 points to lead Oregon State. The Beavers also got 10 points each from guards Felicia Ragland and Cherrith Wiersma, with Ragland getting three steals and Wiersma five assists. Oregon State shot 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the field.
OSU was whistled for its seventh team foul with 15:26 left in the first half and Stanford was 12-for-15 at the line by halftime, when the Cardinal held a 40-26 lead. In the second half, Stanford built its lead as large as 29 points before OSU finished the game on a 14-5 run.
