Women's Basketball Just Misses Weekend Sweep
January 17, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State couldn't quite pull of a weekend sweep in Pacific-10 women's basketball Sunday afternoon, falling 72-67 to Washington at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers (10-5 overall, 2-4 Pacific-10) saw the game slip away in the final five minutes, being outscored 12-7 in that span.
"It was a brawl. It was a war," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra, whose team had beaten Washington State on Friday night. "We're disappointed with the loss."
Despite the roughness of the game, Washington (8-6, 4-1) was called for just two fouls in the first 18 minutes of the second half. The Beavers were hurt inside by the lack of center Sissel Pierce, who missed both the weekend's games with a knee injury but could return to play next week. "It was really physical," said OSU's Ericka Brosterhous, who helped the Beavers hold the lead for much of the second half. "I felt we had that game the whole time."
Brosterhous, with career-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds, was one of three Beavers to score in double figures. Reda Kakeranaite also had 14 points to go with her seven rebounds and six assists, while Felicia Ragland added 13 points.
Oregon State was even at 60-60 until Amber Hall hit a short hook to give Washington a 62-60 lead with 4:55 to go. The Huskies pushed the lead to 69-62 on another hook by Hall with 2:00 left, but OSU worked its way back within 70-67 when Brosterhous hit one of two free throws with 9.6 seconds to play.
OSU quickly fouled, but Hall hit one of two free throws with 8.3 seconds left to make it 71-67. After Tammy Arnold's long inbound pass sailed out of bounds, the Beavers fouled Hall again with 6.6 seconds remaining and she again made one of two shots for the final margin.
Malinda Lynch had a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Washington, while Hall added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Franza had 16 points for the Huskies and Jamie Redd 11.
Both teams played aggressive defense, forcing OSU into 28 turnovers and Washington into 27.
Oregon State led by as many as 10 points midway through the first half, then Washington clawed its way back to a 41-37 halftime lead. "Our pressure kept us in it in the first half," Spoelstra said. "Then we probably had four or five turnovers late that hurt us."
The Beavers came back and built leads of as many as five points early in the second half, and still had a 60-57 advantage when Ragland hit a short jumper with 6:32 to play.
Oregon State now goes on the road for games at Arizona State on Thursday and at Arizona on Saturday. Washington returns home to meet California on Thursday and Stanford on Saturday.
