OSU baseball wins one, then it gets dark
February 14, 1999
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Mark Newell pitched a six-hitter as Oregon State beat Cal State-Northridge 9-1 in the first game of a non-league baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. The second game was suspended due to darkness after eight innings with the score tied 4-4; the teams will complete that game starting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday and then play the final game of their four-game series.
OSU (4-2 overall) will start freshman lefthander Craig Hays in the series finale. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
Newell, who missed almost all of last season with an elbow injury, picked up his first win in nearly two years by beating the Matadors (7-7). The junior righthander walked one and struck out three.
"His breaking ball wasnt as sharp as it has been (in previous seasons)," OSU assistant coach Dan Spencer said of Newell. "But if he can throw like he did today, well take that every time out."
The Beavers gave Newell an early lead to work with, going up 2-0 in the second inning on run-scoring singles by Jeff Sakamoto and Corrie Willkie. Oregon State extended the lead to 6-0 with a four-run third inning, getting an RBI double from Tim Dryden and two more run-scoring singles by Sakamoto and Willkie.
OSU had 13 hits in the game, including a 2-for-3 day by Dryden, 2-for-4 games by Rod Gott and Bryan Ingram and a 2-for-5 effort from Willkie.
"Were having a couple veterans that are struggling a bit right now," Spencer said. "Weve left a lot of guys on base, no doubt. But we did a better job today and weve gotten some production out of a couple of other guys."
