CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Jason Heide scored nine of his 20 points in a six-minute stretch in the second half as Oregon State beat Washington State 83-64 in Pacific-10 men's basketball Saturday evening.
Heide's outburst came as the Beavers (12-10 overall, 6-7 Pac-10) pulled away from the Cougars (9-15, 3-10) with a 20-8 run that gave OSU an 80-60 lead with 1:56 left.
Oregon State also got 19 points and six assists from Deaundra Tanner, while Josh Steinthal added 10 points. Washington State was led by Eddie Miller's game-high 22 points and s4even rebounds, and Kojo Menhsah-Bonsu added 10 points for the Cougars.
Oregon State ended a three-game losing streak and improved to 11-1 this season at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers overcame a sluggish start with three first-half surges on their way to their highest-scoring conference game of the season.
WSU, which had won three straight over OSU and 10 of the previous 11 games, broke out to an 8-0 lad in the first two minutes. Ramunas Petraitis hit a three-pointer and added a three-point play as OSU came back to take an 11-10 lead.
Washington State went in front 15-13 on a three-point play by Mensah-Bonsu, then Oregon State reeled off 11 unanswered points to go in front for good at 24:15.
The Beavers' Clifton Jones scored all six of his points during that stretch.
The Cougars cut the gap to 26-22 on a three-pointer by Steve Slotemaker with 7:58 left in the half.
Oregon State responded again, outscoring the Cougars 15-3 over the next 3:43 as Tanner scored five points and Steinthal four to give OSU a 41-25 lead.
After OSU was up 47-34 at halftime, the Cougars managed to get within six points several times in the second half. WSU had the ball with chances to narrow the gap to four points with over eight minutes left, but came up empty on misses by Slotemaker and Jan-Michael Thomas and a missed freethrow by Slotemaker.
