Women's Golf 17th after One Round of NCAA West Regionals
May 6, 1999
Houston, Texas - Oregon State University senior Kathleen Takaishi fired an opening round 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 13th after 18 holes of the NCAA West Regional Championships. As a team, the Beavers are 17th after a round of 318.
Takaishi had a pair of birdies for her round to go along with two bogeys and a double bogey. The San Bernardino, Cal., native played the last seven holes of the Pine Forest Country Club 1-under.
"I actually was striking the ball better on the front nine, but I had some key up and downs the last few holes," Takaishi said. "The key for my round, and what will be my key for the rest of this tournament, is patience. I know its a clich, but this course really makes you think one shot at a time."
The Beavers 318 leaves them eight shots back of 10th place Pepperdine. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 19-22 in Tulsa, Okla.
"Overall, I thought we played like we didnt have the course quite figured out," OSU Head Coach Rise Lakowske said. "Its a very U.S. Amateur type course --small greens and very tight. You can make birdies here, but you are going to make some bogeys."
Jenna Daniels of Arizona shot the low round for the day, a 2-under-70 to take a one shot lead into the second round. Sasha Medina of New Mexico State, Angie Yoon of Nevada and Nicole Dalkas of USC were the only other players to score under par, shooting 71.
"For us to make a big jump in the standings we need to improve our short game play," Lakowske explained. "There are a lot of bunkers on this course, many more than we are used to at Trysting Tree and more than we see in many other tournaments. We practiced on sand shots after the round today, and Im hopeful that will pay off over the next two rounds."
Five of the top six teams on the leader board are Pacific-10 Conference members. Stanford shot a 4-over-292 to take an early seven-shot advantage. Arizona State and USC are tied for second, Arizona and New Mexico State are tied for fourth, and Oregon is sixth.
The remaining scores for Oregon State players include Erin Borcherts tied for 65th after an 80, Reena Eklund is tied for 76th at 81, Rachel Borcherts is tied for 90th at 83, and Anne Brooksby is tied for 94th at 84.
"We will have to play our absolute best the next two days to qualify for the NCAA Championships, but this team is capable of shooting low numbers," Lakowske concluded.
