Women's Softball Splits with Arizona State
April 24, 1999
Corvallis, Ore. - The No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils belted nine hits in game two to earn a split with No. 8 Oregon State in a womens Pacific-10 Conference softball doubleheader at Ropes-Fetrow Field. The Sun Devils won the contest 5-0 after Oregon State won the opener 1-0.
The Sun Devils loaded the bases with one out in the third inning of game two off of Beaver pitcher Crystal Draper, but Draper was able to pitch her way out of trouble without allowing a run. ASU stranded two more baserunners in the fourth, and had 11 for the game, before scoring in the fifth. ASU added three more runs in the sixth to clinch the victory. Sun Devil pitcher Erica Beach had two RBI in the game and pitched a four-hitter to improve to 15-7 for the season. Arizona State also had two-hit outings by Melissa Miller and Erin Wardein.
Game one featured a pitching dual between Tarrah Beyster for Oregon State and Kirsten Voak of ASU. Each team had just two hits, with Voak striking out 12 in the loss. Beaver right-fielder Jodi Chmielewski had the game-winning hit, driving one of her two doubles for the game into center field, scoring Brooke Rutschman. Rutschman had reached base on an error by left-fielder Missy Hixon. Beyster earned the victory on the mound, improving to 23-8.
The split ensures Oregon State will at least share second-place in the conference with No. 3 Arizona at 10-6 (Arizona was at Oregon Saturday and lost game 1). The Beavers are now 39-14 overall and will host the Wildcats in a Noon doubleheader Sunday. Arizona State (35-15, 6-10) travels to Eugene Sunday.
