Oregon State (11-5-1 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10 Northern Division) will get final exams out of the way this week, then start its quest for a Pacific-10 Northern Division title this weekend when it visits longtime rival Washington State (7-10, 0-0) for a four-game series.
The Beavers are on a five-game winning streak, but have yet to play consistently well for a long stretch.
"You've got to credit our guys for finding ways to win; now we've got to find ways to get better," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "But we've got to play better in conference if we're going to have a chance to win the thing. Our pitching has been pretty good, but offensively, we've been very inconsistent."
The Beavers have been without starting pitcher Mark Newell, who suffered an elbow injury in the season-opener. Saturday, they lost centerfielder Jason Stranberg to a thumb injury.
Freshmen Eric Stark and Casey Macomb are possible replacements if Stranberg is unable to play this weekend, or Rob Colley could move over from right field.
"We've got to hope somebody steps up big for us with Jason hurt and Mark out," Casey said. "Nobody has done it yet, and it's got to happen right away. The competition is going to be a lot stiffer as we move down the road, and we've got to get better."
Washington State finished a distant third in the Northern Division last season, 13 games out of first place, and was an uncharacteristic 13-42 overall. Already this spring, the Cougars have shown themselves to be an improved team by winning six of their first 10 games.
"They're much, much better than they were last year," Casey said of the Cougars. "They're an offensive club, and they've got some good offensive people. We've got to go play much better than we did this past weekend."
WSU was swept in a three-game series at California this past weekend, losing 10-6, 6-4 and 17-16; they play at Gonzaga on Wednesday before meeting the Beavers.
The Cougars have been led by junior first baseman Casey Kelley, who is batting .349 with 5 homers and 16 runs batted in; senior utility player Scott Randall, who is batting .344 with 1 homer and 12 RBIs; and freshman outfielder Jason Grove, who is hitting .339 with 3 homers and 13 RBIs. Sophomore lefthander Wade Parrish is 3-1 with a 4.42 earned run average, while sophomore lefthander Todd Meldahl is 2-2 with an 8.87 ERA.

Ancient history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State is 155-200-2 all-time against Washington State in a series that dates back to 1910. The Beavers are on a four-game winning streak against the Cougars, having swept a four-game series in Pullman to end the 1997 season. OSU won eight of the nine meetings last season; the Beavers have won 23 of the last 31 games between the two schools. Ouch, that's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: Junior pitcher Mark Newell left the season-opener against South Florida in the top of the fourth inning with pain in his right elbow; an MRI exam showed a new ligament tear. He will miss at least another two weeks and it is still uncertain whether he'll be able to return this season.
Senior outfielder Jason Stranberg broke hisleft thumb sliding into second base on March 14 against St. Martin's. He was to be examined Monday; it is unknown whether he will be able to return this season.
Freshman pitcher/outfielder Paul Hansen could return to action this week after suffering a bone chip in his right elbow in February. OSU opens at Coleman with 4-0 mark
LAST WEEK: Oregon State opened its home schedule with four wins. On March 11, the Beavers won their 11th straight Coleman Field opener, beating Portland 7-2 in front of 655 fans, OSU's largest Opening Day crowd since 1991. On March 13, Oregon State set season-highs for runs and hits as it beat St. Martin's 22-4, pounding out 19 hits. On March 14, OSU needed four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 win over the Saints; Jason Stranberg's two-out, two-run single to right drove in the tying and winning runs. On March 15, Joe Gerber's three-run homer in the first inning started OSU on its way to a 10-2 victory over St. Martin's that completed the three-game sweep. Making history
ALL-TIME RECORD: Oregon State's all-time record in varsity baseball is now 1,592-1,070-15, a winning percentage of .597. OSU's all-time record in conference games is now 718-492, a winning percentage of .593. In its 88 seasons of varsity baseball prior to 1998, OSU had 66 winning seasons; the Beavers finished at .500 in another four seasons.
Ride, captains, ride
1998 TEAM CAPTAINS: Oregon State has four team captains for 1998: senior catcher Ben Bertrand, senior pitcher Andrew Checketts, senior third baseman Ryan Lipe, and senior outfielder Jason Stranberg. Checketts and Lipe were also captains in 1997. Looking into the crystal ball
PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: Oregon State is a concensus pick to finish second in the Pacific-10 Northern Division race. The Beavers are tabbed for second place by the division's coaches, Baseball America magazine and Collegiate Baseball magazine.
Baseball America's ranking of all the nation's Division I programs has Oregon State 48th. In its Players to Watch section, Collegiate Baseball named 4 Beavers: junior pitcher Mark Newell, senior pitcher Andrew Checketts, senior third baseman Ryan Lipe and senior catcher Ben Bertrand.
Casey in the dugout hits 100
HEAD COACH PAT CASEY: Pat Casey is in his fourth season as Oregon State's head baseball coach, and he picked up his 100th victory at the school when the Beavers beat San Diego 8-3 at USD on February 21. He has a record of 106-57-4 with the Beavers. His career college head coaching record is 274-169-5, which includes seven years at George Fox University in Newberg.
Casey is the fourth OSU baseball head coach to reach 100 victories at the school, following Ralph Coleman (561), Gene Tanselli (115) and Jack Riley (613). Casey reached the mark quickest, as it took Coleman until his ninth season at Oregon State and it took both Tanselli and Riley until their fifth seasons.
Casey came to OSU from George Fox in the fall of 1994 after leading the Bruins to a 171-113-1 record. George Fox won three NAIA District 2 titles during that time.
It's just plain old home
COLEMAN FIELD: Coleman Field may not have a lot of frills at the moment, but that's never bothered the Beavers. Oregon State has been playing on the same site since starting varsity baseball in 1907; the Beavers are 831-348-1 at home for a winning percentage of .705. Oregon State is 4-0 at home this season; in 1997, OSU was 16-4 at Coleman Field.
At the conclusion of this season, work will begin on Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The structure, which will open for the 1999 season, will seat approximately 1,500 people and include a press box, concession/lobby area, dugouts, locker rooms, men's and women's restrooms and storage areas.
First sign of spring
OREGON STATE SEASON OPENERS: Opening Day has been good to the Beavers. After beating South Florida 7-6 on February 13, OSU has won its last five season-openers and 10 of its last 12. Since starting varsity baseball in 1907, the Beavers are 64-25 on Opening Day. OSU had been slated for its earliest-ever season-opener, but the Feb. 6-8 series at San Jose State was rained ou, leaving the Feb. 7, 1997 game at Hawaii as Oregon State's earliest opener. Home at last
OREGON STATE HOME OPENERS: After beating Portland 7-2 on March 11, Oregon State has an all-time record of 72-17 in home openers. The Beavers have won their last 11 Coleman Field openers in a row and 26 of the last 28.
OSU played its first 13 games of 1998 season away from Coleman Field. OSU's March 11 home opener was the latest for the Beavers since 1989, when they met Western Oregon on March 11; the last time a home opener was later than that was in 1982, when OSU met Pacific (Ore.) on March 13.
After opening with those 13 games on the road, OSU was scheduled to play 21 of its final 35 games at Coleman Field. Pacific-10 positioning

OREGON STATE'S TROPICAL RAINOUTS: In the past 2 seasons, OSU has had its schedule altered due to rain in 3 places you might least expect it - Florida, California and Hawaii.
From February 18-22, the Beavers found their schedule jumbled by the rain while at San Diego State's Jim Dietz Classic; OSU wound up playing one tournament game in Yuma, Ariz., and had another rained out. The weekend of February 15, Oregon State had a game rescheduled because of rain while playing in the Florida Marlins Invitational at Melbourne, Fla. A week earlier, OSU's season-opening series at San Jose State was rained out before the Beavers ever left Corvallis. On the first weekend of the 1997 season, Oregon State had one game of a doubleheader at Hawaii-Hilo cancelled because of rain. Won't you run home, Matt Bailie
