Men's Basketball Defeated by Stanford

March 7, 1998
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - As they have so often this season, the Stanford Cardinal won with long-range shooting.
Arthur Lee had a career-high 27 points and tied career highs with 10 assists and four steals as No. 11 Stanford overcame a sluggish start to defeat injury-depleted Oregon State 85-77 Saturday night.
By going 10-for-23 on 3-pointers, Stanford set a school record with 229 3-pointers this season. Lee's 3-pointer with 5:18 left in the first half was Stanford's 223rd of the season, breaking the mark of 222 set last year.
"Art Lee obviously had a great game. The thing that I liked about him the last two games is that he's pushed the ball very well up the court," Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said. "When you're scoring, it makes your whole game look a lot better."
Kris Weems and Mark Madsen added 16 points each for Stanford (26-4, 15-3 Pac-10), which shot just 47 percent after hitting a season-high 68 percent of its shots Thursday night in a 28-point win over Oregon.
Oregon State led 18-15 midway through the first half when Ryan Mendez hit consecutive 3-pointers to ignite a 26-10 Stanford run for the rest of the half. Later in the game, Lee and Weems hit key 3-pointers when the Cardinal were struggling.
Deaundra Tanner had 25 points and Jerome Vaden added 20 for the Beavers (13-17, 3-15), who lost seven of their final eight games. Tanner and Vaden both had career highs in points.
But the Beavers missed several free throws down the stretch as they tried to rally against the Cardinal.
"I was real proud of our guys, because they would not stop," Oregon State coach Eddie Payne said. "But missed free throws killed us. That's been an aching problem all year."
The 26 wins match the second most by a Stanford team, tying the mark set by the 1988-89 squad. Only the 28-4 record by the 1941-42 team that won the NCAA championship was better.
Stanford finished with a 11-2 record at home. Oregon State went 3-8 on the road.
Oregon State was missing leading scorer Corey Benjamin, sidelined with an abdominal strain. The Beavers lost guard Ron Grady for the season in mid-January with a lacerated kidney and bruised ribs.
Leading 41-28 at halftime, Stanford extended its lead to 21 points on a jumper by Weems with 12:55 remaining. The Beavers got back within 70-60 with 5:22 left on a jumper by Todd Marshall, and cut the Stanford lead to six points with 3:07 left in a 3-pointer by Tanner.
But Oregon State could get no closer. Lee had four points as the Cardinal used a 5-0 run to rebuild their lead, and then held on by hitting 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch.
