Feb. 21, 1998
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Matt Bailie was 4-for-5 with a homerun and drove in four runs Saturday as Oregon State beat San Diego 8-3 in the Jim Dietz Classic baseball tournament at USD'd Cunningham Stadium. OSU (5-2 overall) was also to have played Portland on Saturday morning, but tournament organizers cancelled the game hours before it was supposed to start.
The Beavers finish the tournament at 10 a.m. at USD against Minnesota; the game had originally benn set for Sunday afternoon, but had to be moved up in anticapation of bad weather in San Diego.
OSU picked up its third strsight win by beating USD, however the win over CETYS Universidad of Mexico will not count in its record. Andrew Chocketts got the pitching win, giving up three runs in seven innings to improve to 2-0 this spring.
Bailie broke the game open with a towering three-run homer that cleared a row of trees behind the left fiel fence, putting OSU up 8-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Bailie-whose four hits were a career high and whose four RBIs tied a career high- already had three singles, two of them bloop jobs over the second baseman.
