OSU wrestlers split two dual meets

PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State 149-pounder Oscar Wood moved up one place on the schools career pins list Friday night as the 17th-ranked Beavers split a pair of dual meets at the Oregon Wrestling Classic. OSU beat Southern Oregon, ranked fourth nationally in the NAIA, by a 30-9 score before falling to seventh-ranked Nebraska 19-12.
OSU (10-5 overall, 3-1 Pacific-10) returns home to face Wyoming at 2 p.m. Sunday in Gill Coliseum.
Against SOU, Wood pinned Jesse Mindlin, ranked third nationally in the NAIA, in 1:08; it was Woods 45th career pin, tying him with Greg Strobel (190 pounds; 1972-74). Wood also took a 6-1 win over Nebraskas 16th-ranked Joe Henson to improve to 21-1 this season with 11 pins.
Beaver heavyweight Mat Orndorff stretched his win streak to 13 matches by pinning SOUs Steve Santoni in 1:20 and beating Nebraskas 10th-ranked J.R. Plienis 5-2. Orndorff is 20-3 with 11 pins this season.
OSU head coach Joe Wells, who wasnt happy with his teams performance in last weeks 20-19 win over Oregon, came away from Memorial Coliseum in a better mood.
"It was a much better effort," Wells said. "I was more pleased with the effort in this meet we lost (against Nebraska) than I was in the meet we won a week ago we can take some good things from here and eliminate some mistakes in other areas. Nebraska is a real nice team, and if a couple of matches go the other way, we could have won it."
One highlight for OSU against the Cornhuskers came from 141-pounder Paul Barron. Barron, who was 3-10 on the season and had lost five straight matches, recorded a three-point near fall at the final buzzer to beat Nebraskas Travis Vandever 8-7.
