February 11, 1999
HONOLULU - The Oregon State softball team (1-1) committed four throwing errors as the Beavers lost to Baylor (1-0), 5-3, in the opening game of the Paradise Classic on Thursday.
Baylor broke away from a 3-3 tie with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Mary Hess on first, Kristen Combe grounded to third and Parisa Plant's attempt to end the inning fell apart when she overthrew to first base.
Misty Perry then singled to right field with runners on first and second, and both Hess and Combe scored after Jodi Chmielewski overthrew the ball to first in an attempt to catch Perry.
Crystal Draper took the loss in her collegiate debut. She struck out six batters while allowing seven hits. Only one of Baylors five runs was earned.
"Crystal pitched a good game," said coach Kirk Walker. "We beat ourselves."
Offensively, the Beavers got two hits apiece from Shawna Feldt, Brooke Rutschman and Kim Herman. Feldt and Herman both doubled, and Feldt scored twice.
The Beavers continue play in the Paradise Classic when they meet Ohio State at 10:00 a.m. PST Friday. Oregon State also will meet Cal State Fullerton following the game with the Buckeyes.
