Cook earns Pac-10 baseball honor
April 26, 1999
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon States B.R. Cook was named the Pacific-10 Conference baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. It was the second time this season Cook has earned the honor.
Cook, a junior righthander from Salem, Ore. (Sprague High), threw a four-hitter and recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts as the Beavers won at Washington 6-3 on Saturday. In that game, Cook allowed just two earned runs as he faced a Husky squad that was batting .313 as a team entering the game. He also outdueled UWs Jeff Heaverlo, who was 8-1 with a 2.40 earned run average entering the game and is considered a likely first-round choice in Junes major league draft.
Previously this season, Cook had earned the Pac-10 award for pitching a one-hitter in a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked Oklahoma State in the San Diego Classic on Feb. 18. That win also made him one of Collegiate Baseball newspapers three national Players of the Week.
Cook has won his last two starts and is now 5-7 this season with a 4.84 ERA. The Beavers (15-30 overall, 3-12 Pacific-10) play a three-game series at Stanford starting on Friday.
