Softball Sweeps Portland State
April 15, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. -Tarrah Beyster pitched a two-hit shutout to pick up her 19th win of the season and tie the Oregon State single-season wins mark in the second game of a doubleheader sweep over Portland State Wednesday afternoon.
The 18th ranked OSU softball team (24-13) defeated Portland State (21-18), 2-0, in the opener and then sat through an hour-long rain delay instead of the usual 20 minute intermission before handing the Vikings a 3-0 loss in the nightcap.
Brooke Hofstetter pitched her first shutout of the year to improve to 5-6 with the win in the first game. She allowed just four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
"Brooke threw a nice ballgame in that first game," said head coach Kirk Walker. "She kept them off balance and worked ahead of the batters."
The Beavers scored their only runs of the game in the second inning, with Jenni Jodoin reaching on a two-base error when PSU centerfielder Shannon Rondeau dropped a fly ball. Brooke Rutschman singled to send Jodoin to third, and Tasha Heddinger came up with a sacrifice fly to put the Beavers on top. Rutschman later scored on Jodi Chmielewski's RBI single to right field.
In the second game, Beyster allowed just the two hits, one in the second and the other in the seventh. She struck out nine batters and walked just one in the complete game victory that put her atop the record books as one of only two OSU pitchers to win 19 games in a season. Joan Harvey also won 19 in 1984.
"Tarrah had a nice performance, especially having been out with a viral infection this week," said Walker. "It was good for her to throw a complete game to build up her endurance for the weekend."
Kelli Kranz and Kim Herman both singled, scored and drove in a run in the second game, while Chmielewski also scored for the Beavers.
Heddinger went 1-for-4 with two RBI for the day, while Parisa Plant was 3-for-5. Chmielewski, Beyster and Kranz each had two hits on the day."
"Offensively, I thought the team as a whole did very well. We did a pretty good job adjusting to the slower pitching in that first game," Walker said. "Tasha Heddinger came up with some big RBIs for us, and Parisa Plant hit the ball well."
