Oregon State (5-9-1 overall, 0-5-0 Pacific-10) will finish its home schedule and send off a pair of seniors as the Beavers host Arizona State (7-8-0, 3-2-0) and Arizona (3-8-2, 0-4-1). This weekend's games will mark the final home contests for seniors Lindy Brown and Jona Maukonen, and they will be honored prior to Sunday's game against Arizona.
"It'll be nice to be at home," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We want to go in and do very well. They're our last home games, and we'd like to get something positive out of both games."
To do that, the Beavers will need to be more consistent defensively than they were in 4-1 losses at Southern California and UCLA last weekend.
"It was another weekend where we were playing teams that are very strong, but we also contributed to our downfall," Fennah said. "USC came out and played very well against us, I was very impressed. But we spotted them a goal by not picking up a player. Against UCLA, we again started fairly well but we didn't pick up and conceded a goal."
The Beavers should be on more equal footing this weekend.
"Both Arizona State and Arizona have had some up-and-down results the last few weeks," Fennah said. "We should be able to go in and compete well against them."
Arizona State has won 5 of its last 7 games and split a pair of home games last weekend, beating Washington State 2-1 and losing to Washington 2-1. Freshman midfielder Stacey Tullock leads the Sun Devils with 30 points on 12 goals and 6 assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Reinke has a goals-against average of 1.27 and 2 shutouts.
Arizona saw its losing streak reach 4 games in a 3-2 overtime loss to Washington last week, then the Wildcats managed a 0-0 tie with Washington State. Senior forward Nikki Jones leads Arizona with 13 points on 4 goals and 5 assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Inger Airheart has a goals-against average of 1.91 and 1 shutout.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: OSU trails the all-time series with Arizona State 0-1-0 after last season's 4-0 loss in Tempe.
OSU leads the all-time series with Arizona 2-1-0 but is on a 1-game losing streak against the Wildcats after last season's 2-0 loss in Tucson. OSU's last win in the series was 4-0 in 1996 in Corvallis.
That's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: All of Oregon State's players are expected to be available for this weekend's games. OSU loses twice by 4-1 count, at USC and UCLA
LAST WEEK: Oregon State lost a pair of Pacific-10 games in Los Angeles, falling 4-1 at Southern California and 4-1 at 19th-ranked UCLA.
Against USC, the Beavers fell behind 3-0 by halftime and trailed 4-0 until Lindy Brown scored off an assist by Ann Marie Fallow in the 81st minute.
Against UCLA, OSU drew even at 1-1 when Lindy Brown scored off an assist by Jona Maukonen in the 36th minute, then gave up 3 goals in a 6-minute stretch before halftime.
Nothing could be Fennah
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH STEVE FENNAH: Steve Fennah has a 5-9-1 record in his first season as Oregon State's head coach. He spent the past 5 years at Jesuit High in Beaverton, Ore. Fennah guided Jesuit to 4 straight Oregon Class 4A state titles in his final 4 seasons at the school. After leading the Crusaders to an 84-2-6 record and top-8 national rankings in each of his 5 seasons at Jesuit, he was named head coach at OSU on Feb. 6, 1998.

FIRST-HALF WOES: Oregon State might like to find a way to just skip the first half of its games this season. The Beavers have been outscored 21-7 in the first 45 minutes, but have outscored their opposition 10-8 in the second half.
Let's put an end to it
STOPPING NEGATIVE STREAKS, CREATING POSITIVE ONES: Oregon State has terminated some rather lengthy, rather unpleasant streaks already this season. The Beavers have also put together some positive streaks of their own.
The Beavers' 4-1 win at Cal State-Fullerton on Sept. 7 ended a 14-game winless streak; OSU had recorded 13 losses and 1 tie since beating Eastern Washington 6-0 at home on Sept. 27, 1997. It also ended a 15-game winless streak in road contests; the Beavers hadn't won on an opponent's home field since a 3-1 victory at Arizona on Sept. 29, 1995 (OSU had managed wins on neutral fields during that time). OSU made the most of its scoring chances against the Titans. The Beavers were outshot 18-5, but scored on their first 4 shots to overcome a 1-0 deficit.
OSU beat Eastern Washington 2-0 on Sept. 26 and Idaho State 1-0 on Sept. 27. The back-to-back wins were OSU's first since a 3-game winning streak over Portland State, Fresno State and Cal State-Sacramento from Sept. 22-29, 1996. The wins also marked OSU's first consecutive shutouts since blanking Arkansas and California by 2-0 scores on Oct. 9-13, 1995.
OSU extended its winning streak and shutout streak to 3 with a 2-0 win at Idaho on Sept. 30; OSU hadn't posted 3 straight shutouts since the Beavers had 5 in a row in the middle of the 1993 season.
Home improvement LORENZ FIELD AT VALLEY STADIUM: Oregon State's soccer facility, Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium, provides soccer enthusiasts with one of the top places to both play and watch the sport on the West Coast.
The main seating section, located on the west sideline, has a capacity of approximately 1,000. It rises well above field level and puts most fans near midfield to get a better picture of what is happening on the pitch.
This fall, the media and statistics crews will also enjoy a better vantage point as they begin using the press box behind the back row of the west sideline seats.
Smaller sections of seats and standing room areas now circle the rest of the field, bringing capacity to approximately 1,500.
OSU is 7-16-0 at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, which opened for the 1996 season.
The stadium is located a block southeast of Parker Stadium, just south of the intersection of 17th Street and Western Boulevard.
Leave it to Beavers
OSU ON TELEVISION: Oregon State will have 1 of its games this fall televised on Fox Sports Northwest. The Nov. 1 home game against Arizona will be shown on tape delay Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
