Men's Golf Seventh after First Round of NCAA West Regional
May 20, 1999
Tucson, Ariz. - Oregon State University freshman John Lepak shot a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional to help the Beavers into seventh place. Oregon State is aiming for a top nine finish in the 54-hole event, and a berth into the NCAA Championships.
The Beavers shot 295 as a team and trail first round leader Arizona State by 12 shots. Nine schools range from fourth place Fresno State at 290 to 12th place New Mexico State at 299.
"We played pretty well for the condition we faced on the course," OSU Head Coach Mike Ketcham said. "The weather was perfect, but the course setup was rather difficult. The pin placements were on the front part of the greens, and combined with the firmness of the greens, it makes it difficult to get the ball close."
Lepaks round of 71 is his 14th under par for the season. The Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year is tied for eighth with five other players, and three shots back back of Jose Garrido of BYU.
The rest of the Oregon State team includes Eric Dahm tied for 19th at 73, Dustin Wayne is tied for 33rd at 74, Anthony Arvidson is tied for 67th at 77, and Justin Johnson is tied for 79th at 79.
"I anticipte Anthony and Justin playing better tomorrow," Ketcham added. "We need everybody to put forth a consistent effort for us to maintain a spot in the top half of the leaderboard."
The second of three rounds at the Tucson National Resort is scheduled for Friday.
