Softball takes two games at California
April 12, 1999
BERKELEY, Calif. - Tarrah Beyster threw a one-hitter in the opener and then hit the game-winning home run in the nightcap to lift the No. 13 Oregon State softball to a doubleheader sweep over No. 14 California on Monday.
OSU won both games, 1-0, with the first game going 11 innings. The wins marked the first time the Beavers have won at Cal under head coach Kirk Walker.
"These were our first two wins here at Cal and that was great for us to go out and beat them at home," Walker said. "Both pitchers did a great job of controlling their offense and they utilized our defense, which played extremely well."
The Beavers scattered six hits throughout the game, but didn't manage to score until the 11th inning. Jenni Jodoin, who started the inning on second base under tiebreaker rules, went to third on Heather Chinn's sacrifice bunt and later scored the game-winning run when Shawna Feldt picked up her third hit of the game.
Beyster pitched the complete game and gave up just one hit, a single by Pauline Duenas in the seventh inning. She improved to 19-7 with the victory.
"Offensively, we kept the pressure on all day and were able to capitalize on a few of our opportunities," Walker said. "It was a tremendous team effort from everyone in the starting lineup and off the bench."
In the second game, Beyster broke a scoreless tie with a homer to centerfield - her ninth of the year - to put the Beavers up 1-0 in the sixth inning.
Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Crystal Draper allowed back-to-back hits and Beyster came in on relief. She put an end to the inning with a double play, and then got three straight outs in the seventh for the save.
Draper moved to 14-5 with the win, while Beyster picked up her fifth save of the year.
