September 13, 1998
SEATTLE - First-year players recorded all the goals and assists for Oregon State as the Beavers beat Loyola Marymount 3-0 in mens soccer at the Washington Tournament. Greg Howes, Nick Jensen and Jack Wheeler all had goals and Ben Roth added an assist for the Beavers (1-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF), who got a shutout from goalkeeper Bryan Hill.
OSU now readies for next weekends first home games of the season, against Western Washington at 1 p.m. Saturday and Florida International at 1 p.m. Sunday on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium.
Against Loyola Marymount (1-4-0 overall), Oregon State scored early and then put the game away late. Greg Howes, a junior college transfer, dribbled through the Lion defense and put the ball in the lower right corner of the net in the 13th minute to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
OSU maintained that advantage until the 77th minute, when freshman Nick Jensen found the rebound of his own missed shot and knocked it in for a 2-0 Beaver lead. OSU added its final goal in the 87th minute, when sophomore newcomer Jack Wheeler took a pass from freshman Ben Roth and found the net to make it 3-0.
Oregon State had a 13-11 advantage in shots, but Hill was forced to make just one save on the day. The Lions outshot OSU 8-6 in the first half but the Beavers pressed the attack after intermission, owning a 7-2 advantage in shots in the second half.
Hill, a junior, recorded his fifth career shutout, putting him in a tie for third place on OSUs all-time list.
