Chmielewski Chosen in Third Round of Women's Pro Softball League Draft
December 7, 1998
ST. PETERSBURG BEACH, Fla. - Oregon State senior outfielder Jodi Chmielewski was drafted by the Tampa Bay FireStix in the third round of the 1999 Women's Pro Softball League Senior Draft, the WPSL announced Monday.
Athletes who will complete their senior year of eligibility during the upcoming collegiate season were eligible for the draft. A total of 60 seniors were selected in the 10-round draft; Chmielewski was picked 14th overall. She is the first OSU player to be drafted by the WPSL.
Chmielewski is a two-time honorable mention All-Pacific-10 selection. She hit .285 with 18 RBI, 18 runs and a team-best 51 hits as a junior last season. She holds the school record for career doubles (22), and she also ranks third in career hits and fifth in career runs.
Chmielewski was one of six Pacific-10 players chosen in the draft. Cal's Megumi Takasaki was selected 10th overall; the other four were selected in rounds 5, 6, 7 and 9 of the 10-round draft.
The WPSL will begin its third season in May, but if Chmielewski decides to play she would not join the Tampa Bay team until June after OSU's softball season and spring classes are complete.
