OSU men thrash Costa Rica 95-55
November 13, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Deaundra Tanners triple-double led Oregon State to a 95-55 win over the Costa Rica National Team in exhibition mens basketball Thursday night at Gill Coliseum. Tanner had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to record the first triple-double by a Beaver since Gary Payton turned the trick against Portland on Nov. 26, 1989. "It feels good to be able to do that, to be put up there with a guy like Gary Payton," Tanner said. "But hes Gary Payton, and Im Dino Tanner ... still, it feels good."
Tanner was 4-for-12 from the field, but also had four steals.
"It seemed like I was rebounding and dishing off to our shooters, plus scoring a little, too," Tanner said.
Jason Heide added 18 points and 9 rebounds for the Beavers, who open the counting season Nov. 19 against Idaho State. Josh Steinthal had 13 points and Sasa Petrovic 12 for Oregon State.
Costa Rica was led by Rogelio Stephens and Orlando Daily, who had 12 points each. Gilberto Brown added 11 points for Costa Rica.
Oregon State, with eight new players on its roster, trailed 19-15 in the early going.
"I thought, in a lot of ways, it was a typical first game," OSU head coach Eddie Payne said. "They came out in a zone and we hadnt worked against it. It slowed us down and took away our energy. We got beat to the punch off transition and they had a little run out there, and we had to fight our way back in it."
OSU didnt take the lead for good until George von Backstroms dunk put OSU up 22-21 with 7:58 to go in the first half. That started a 16-5 Beaver run, with OSU eventually leading 39-31 at the half.
"We were tentative early," Payne said. "Then we got more aggressive and got the ball inside, and that had an effect for us. Thats something well have to do this year."
OSU had a goal of getting to the line 25 times in the game and the Beavers reached it, shooting 18-for-25 at the line. The Beavers were also 11-for-25 on 3-pointers.
The Beavers opened the second half with a 22-10 run, going up 61-41 on Steinthals layup with 13:05 left. Heide had eight points in that stretch, and he finished 7-for-12 from the field; von Backstrom had 9 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field.
"George didnt look near as good as he has in practice," Payne said. "Hes been looking good. We could have a pretty effective two-headed monster at that position (with Heide and von Backstrom)."
Oregon State had a 52-25 edge in rebounds and limited the Costa Ricans to shooting 31 percent from the field (18-for-58). OSU also had 23 assists on its 33 field goals.
"I thought we jelled pretty well," Heidi said. "Its hard when you have eight new guys and you havent played a real game before. I think it turned out pretty well - we just have to look to improve it."
