September 20, 1998
ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- The Oregon State men's golf team shot a final round 291, its best of the tournament, and finished fifth at the William Tucker Intercollegiate. The Beavers improved four places in the final round and finished with a 22-over par 886 score over The Championships Course.
Dustin Wayne, playing in his first Division I tournament, led Oregon State in scoring. The junior from Chabot Junior College shot a 1-under-par 214 in the final round to finish seventh at 2-under-214.
"Dustin played extremely well for his first major college tournament," OSU Head Coach Mike Ketcham said.
Other Oregon State scores include John Lepak tied for 17th at 219; Eric Dahm tied for 32nd at 224; Justin Johnson tied for 57th at 229; and Anthony Arvidson tied for 68th at 232. Lepak and Dahm each shot 72 Saturday.
"Overall, this is a nice start to the season," Ketcham said. "It especially satisfying when you consider our top two players didn't perform very well in this tournament. I think we have a great chance to finish near the top of the leaderboard in the next tournament."
Oregon State travels from Albuquerque to Copperpolis, Cal., to compete in the Pacific Invitational Monday and Tuesday.
David Gossett of Texas won the individual title at the William Tucker at 7-under-209. The Longhorns captured the team title at 3-under-861.
