OSU men begin 5-game homestand
October 20, 1998
FRIDAY, OCT. 23
No. 19 Cal State-Fullerton at Oregon State, 3 p.m.
SUNDAY, OCT. 25
Cal-Irvine at Oregon State, noon
After a pair of road losses last weekend, Oregon State (5-5-1 overall, 1-1-0 MPSF) is out to get its house back in order when the Beavers come home to meet 19th-ranked Cal State-Fullerton (9-3-1, 2-0-0) and Cal-Irvine (7-6-0, 1-1-0). The games begin a 5-game homestand that could propel OSU back into the MPSF race.
"I told the kids, we've got 5 games at home and you never know what's going to happen," OSU head coach Jimmy Conway said. "If we win those 5, we're 10-5-1. We've got to take them one at a time, because they're all big games for us, but we're at home so it should be an advantage."
For the Beavers to make the most of their upcoming opportunities, they'll need to start scoring. The Beavers were shut out 2-0 by both California and Stanford last weekend.
"That's what we've got to work on this week," Conway said. "We were in both games for a long time against California and Stanford but we just didn't score.
"Overall, we're fairly happy on the defensive side. We gave away 3 free kicks that we have to look into, but on the playing side I thought we weren't too bad. The hardest thing in the game is to put the ball in the back of the net."
That will be needed this weekend, though.
"They're different types of teams," Conway said. "Cal State-Fullerton will be technically sound and we need to be more like them. But they have some ability and can be very dangerous ... Cal-Irvine is a hard-working team. They're probably not as technically sound as Fullerton, but they'll be real hard to beat. They're a little like Gonzaga."
Cal State-Fullerton is on a 4-game winning streak and is coming off Sunday's 2-1 home win over a UCLA squad that was ranked sixth in the nation last week. The Titans also beat Cal State-Sacramento 3-0 last Friday.
CSUF's leading scorers are junior forward Colby Jackson and sophomore midfielder Art Ramirez, both with 23 points; Jackson on 9 goals and 5 assists, Ramierez on 11 goals and 1 assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Rockwell has a goals-against average of 1.28 and 3 shutouts.
Cal-Irvine picked up a split at home last weekend, losing 2-1 to UCLA on Friday and beating CSU-Sacramento 4-0 on Sunday.
Senior defender Patrick Lee leads the Anteaters with 17 points on 8 goals and 1 assist, while senior forward Michael Mucino has 14 points on 4 goals and 6 assists. UCI has split time in goal between freshman Kevin Mehrens and sophomore Tyler Reid; they have combined for a goals-against average of 0.90 and 4 shutouts.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: OSU trails the all-time series with Cal State-Fullerton 0-3-0. The last meeting was in 1996 in Los Angeles, and the Titans took a 5-0 win. OSU trails the all-time series with Cal-Irvine 0-2-1 and the last meeting was a 0-0 tie last season in Corvallis. Earlier in 1996, the Anteaters had taken a 4-1 victory in Irvine as Shaun Callahan scored 2 goals; James Albert had OSU's goal. Ouch, that's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: Sophomore defender Jack Wheeler is out for the season after he broke his left leg in practice in late September. Sophomore defender Jake Fenner may be lost for the season with a case of mononucleosis. Beavers lose 2 in Bay Area
LAST WEEK: Oregon State made its first road trip of the MPSF season and suffered a pair of 2-0 losses at California and at 17th-ranked Stanford. It was the first time this season OSU had lost back-to-back games.
OSU captain Fredrik Kummernes played only a few minutes at Cal after suffering from the flu. The Golden Bears scored twice in the first half, and OSU's best chance came in the second half when Greg Howes' header bounced off the crossbar.
Kummernes returned to action at Stanford but the Cardinal managed a goal in each half. Stanford scored off a free kick in the first half and then tallied its second goal when the Beavers failed to clear a ball after halftime.
Conway shows the way
OSU HEAD COACH JIMMY CONWAY: Jimmy Conway, the only head coach at OSU since soccer became a varsity sport in 1988, is in his 11th season with the Beavers. Conway has a record of 95-84-13 at Oregon State. He was Mountain Division Coach of the Year in 1995 and Northwest Colleges Soccer Conference Coach of the Year in 1990.
