SUNDAY, SEPT. 27
Idaho State at Oregon State, 2 p.m.
After having a light workload with just a single game last week, Oregon State (2-3-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) finds itself facing a busier schedule this week with 3 games on Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium. It's a tour of the Big Sky Conference for OSU, which meets Portland State (2-5-0), Eastern Washington (0-4-0) Idaho State (1-4-1).
Sunday's game will be part of a doubleheader that will also include Portland State playing Eastern Washington at noon. The weekend's games were originally to have been a tournament, but the withdrawl of a team from Saturday's play caused the tournament format to be junked.
OSU regained some momentum with a 3-0 win over Gonzaga on Sept. 18 and the Beavers will try to build on that this week.
"That's our task this week," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We've got 3 games at home; we'd talked last week about having a run of games at home and we started it well. It was nice to put Gonzaga away with some quality. We didn't have to scramble out a win, it was a game we deserved to win. We've got to continue that this week and I think we have a chance to do that."
OSU's first goal is to pick up victories, but "we're looking to play in the manner we're trying to," Fennah said. "Keep possession of the ball as long as possible."
Portland State is coming off a 1-0 home win over Gonzaga on Sept. 20, and the Vikings lost 5-0 at Washington State on Sept. 18. PSU's other victory this season was a 1-0 home win over Idaho in its season-opener. Freshman forward Joanna Bowns is PSU's leading scorer with 4 points on 2 goals. Senior goalkeeper Kim Street has a goals-against average of 2.27.
Eastern Washington hasn't played since Sept. 13, when the Eagles lost 3-1 to Texas El-Paso in their home opener. Freshman midfielder Courtney Kelley's unassisted goal in that game was EWU's lone score this season and senior goalkeeper Amy Schmitt has a GAA of 2.25.
Idaho State, a first-year program, is on a 2-game losing streak after falling 3-0 at Brigham Young on Sept. 19 and 1-0 at Nevada-Las Vegas on Sept. 20; the Bengals' only win was 5-0 at home over Albertson on Sept. 12 and they tied Boise State 0-0 on Sept. 5. ISU will play Hawaii on Friday before coming to Corvallis. Freshman defender Teah Beckman is the Bengals' leading scorer with 4 points on 2 goals and junior goalkeeper Chrissy Nelson has a GAA of 1.30 with 2 shutouts.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: OSU leads the all-time series with Portland State 2-0-1. The teams tied their final meeting last season 1-1 at PSU; OSU's last win was 1-0 in Corvallis in 1996.
OSU leads the all-time series with Eastern Washington 1-0-0. The Beavers took a 6-0 win in Corvallis last season.
This will be the first meeting between OSU and Idaho State.
That's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: OSU could be without 2 players for this week's games. Sophomore defender Libby Christensen could return to action after having a problem with her Achilles tendon, while freshman midfielder Leila Kaady is suffering from a case of strept throat. OSU blanks Gonzaga in home opener
LAST WEEK: Oregon State was impressive in its season debut in front of the home fans, shutting out Gonzaga 3-0. The Beavers had a 26-3 advantage in shots and got goals from Lindy Brown, Beth Thomason and Sunny Miller; Coral Slater added an assist.
Nothing could be Fennah
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH STEVE FENNAH: Steve Fennah has a 2-3-0 record in his first season as Oregon State's head coach. He spent the past 5 years at Jesuit High in Beaverton, Ore. Fennah guided Jesuit to 4 straight Oregon Class 4A state titles in his final 4 seasons at the school. After leading the Crusaders to an 84-2-6 record and top-8 national rankings in each of his 5 seasons at Jesuit, he was named head coach at OSU on Feb. 6, 1998.

BEAVER NEWCOMERS: Besides having a new head coach this fall, Oregon State also has plenty of new players. Of the 23 players on this fall's roster, 11 weren't on the 1997 Beaver roster. The newcomers include 8 freshmen and 3 transfers from 4-year colleges.
That's pretty rank
NATIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS: Oregon State can look ahead to this fall's schedule and find 2 games against teams ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll this week. The Beavers play at ninth-ranked UCLA on Oct. 25 and at 19th-ranked Stanford on Nov. 6. OSU also plays 1 team that received votes this week but was not ranked: OSU lost 5-1 to Cal-Irvine.
Taking the local
OSU'S MID-VALLEY PLAYERS: Oregon State didn't have to look far to fill many of its roster spots. There are 4 Beavers who played at nearby high schools: junior forward Sunny Miller (Crescent Valley), junior midfielder Aubrey Robbins (Philomath), sophomore defender Libby Christensen (Corvallis) and sophomore goalkeeper Wendy Matson (Philomath).
Lindy hops a few spots on OSU lists
LINDY BROWN: Senior forward Lindy Brown (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) continues to move up Oregon State's career lists in scoring, goals and assists. After tallying a goal against Gonzaga on Sept. 18, Brown moved into a tie for seventh place on OSU's career scoring list with 42 points and she took sole possession of seventh place on OSU's career goals list with 15. She remains tied for sixth on the Beaver career assists list with 11. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Brown is tied for ninth in scoring with 8 points, tied for sixth in goals with 3 and tied for eighth in assists with 2. Brown started the season quickly, getting 2 goals and 2 assists in OSU's 2 games at the Cal State-Fullerton Tournament.
Miller time
SUNNY MILLER: Junior forward Sunny Miller (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley HS) has started realizing her potential as a scorer early this season. Miller has knocked home 3 goals this season, most recently an unassisted tally in a Sept. 18 win over Gonzaga. She also had a pair of goals in a Sept. 7 win at Cal State-Fullerton. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Miller is tied for 11th in scoring with 6 points and tied for sixth in goals with 3.

STOPPING NEGATIVE STREAKS: Oregon State's 4-1 win at Cal State-Fullerton on Sept. 7 ended some negative streaks for the Beavers. First, it ended a 14-game winless streak; OSU had recorded 13 losses and 1 tie since beating Eastern Washington 6-0 at home on Sept. 27, 1997. Second, it ended a 15-game winless streak in road contests; the Beavers hadn't won on an opponent's home field since a 3-1 victory at Arizona on Sept. 29, 1995 (OSU had managed wins on neutral fields during that time). OSU made the most of its scoring chances against the Titans. The Beavers were outshot 18-5, but scored on their first 4 shots to overcome a 1-0 deficit.
Home improvement
LORENZ FIELD AT VALLEY STADIUM: Oregon State's soccer facility, Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium, provides soccer enthusiasts with one of the top places to both play and watch the sport on the West Coast.
The main seating section, located on the west sideline, has a capacity of approximately 1,000. It rises well above field level and puts most fans near midfield to get a better picture of what is happening on the pitch.
This fall, the media and statistics crews will also enjoy a better vantage point as they begin using the press box behind the back row of the west sideline seats.
Smaller sections of seats and standing room areas now circle the rest of the field, bringing capacity to approximately 1,500.
OSU is 7-14-0 at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, which opened for the 1996 season.
The stadium is located a block southeast of Parker Stadium, just south of the intersection of 17th Street and Western Boulevard.
Leave it to Beavers
OSU ON TELEVISION: Oregon State will have 1 of its games this fall televised on Fox Sports Northwest. The Nov. 1 home game against Arizona will be shown on a tape-delay basis at a time to be announced on Nov. 2.
