Baseball Falls to Arizona
April 12, 1999
TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon State freshman right fielder K.C. Rumrey dropped a fly ball off the bat of Kenny Huff with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, allowing three Wildcats to score and leading to a 10-5 Arizona victory over Oregon State here Sunday afternoon.
With Arizona's fifth consecutive victory, and first Pac-10 sweep of the year, the Cats improved to 25-16, 7-8 in conference play. The Beavers fell 12-24 and 1-8.
The Cats trailed 4-3 when Huff stepped to the plate in the seventh. He hit a deep fly ball to right that appeared to be knocked down by a strong wind blowing towards left field. Rumrey was just shy of the warning track when he was unable to pull the ball in. Arizona's first six runs came on a walk, a hit batsman and a balk, all with the bases loaded, and Rumrey's error.
Sophomore right-hander Wesley Zlotoff (2-2) earned the win in relief after stranding two runners with one out in the seventh. Zlotoff has allowed just four of 18 inherited base runners to score this season. Junior righty Michael Crawford, who started for the Cats, extended his streak of consecutive batters faced without issuing a base on balls to 84 before walking Rumrey in the third inning.
Junior right-hander Mark Newell (3-4) took the loss for Oregon State, though he allowed just three earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work. Freshman infielder Josh Carter collected three hits for the Beavers.
