Men's Golf Travels to Santa Barbara
March 2, 1999
Corvallis, Ore. - SCHEDULE: The Oregon State men's golf team returns to action March 4-5 at the 25th annual "Bite" Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. The two-day 54-hole tournament is hosted by the University of California-Santa Barbara and held at the Sandpiper Golf Course north of Santa Barbara. Thirty-six holes will be played the first day over the par 72, 7,068-yard course. The final 18 holes are scheduled for Friday.
THE TEAM: Oregon State Head Coach Mike Ketcham has announced the following individuals will be competing for Oregon State:
John Lepak, Fr., La Habra Heights, CA (73.0 avg.)
Anthony Arvidson, So., Beaverton, OR (74.1)
Dustin Wayne, Jr., Alameda, CA (73.8 avg.)
Eric Dahm, Jr., Tualatin, OR (73.8)
Ryan Nomura, Fr., Carpinteria, CA (80.0)
THE FIELD: Oregon State is joined in the field by UC Santa Barbara, Alabama-Birmingham, Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State, Sam Houston State, New Mexico State, Idaho, Weber State, Washington State, California, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, CS-Northridge, Long Beach State, San Diego, and Idaho State.
SUBPAR: Oregon State players have a combined 24 rounds under par. Dustin Wayne and John Lepak lead the group with eight subpar rounds, followed by Anthony Arvidson with four, and Eric Dahm and Justin Johnson with two. Last year's team shot 25 rounds under par for the entire season.
KETCHAM ON THE TEAM: "We are very excited to get back into the groove. As you look at our schedule, we don't have a lot of breaks through the NCAA Championships, and that's a positive scenerio for us. The month of April is when you need to start playing your best golf, so the time is now to get things rolling. We have got off to a slow start this spring, especially compared to our results from the fall. The team showed a good sign in the final round of our last event (Taylor Made Intercollegiate) and I look for them to build from that as we go into this tournament."
KETCHAM ON THE TOURNAMENT: "This isn't the strongest field we will see all year, but it gives this team a chance to compete and taste some success. There are a couple of very good teams in this field, but our goal it to win this event. We have had some good practices the last two weeks, thanks to a little more conducive weather.
NOMURA RETURNS HOME: Oregon State freshman Ryan Nomura returns home for this week's event. Nomura is from Carpinteria in Santa Barbara County and has played Sandpiper Golf Course many times.
THE LAST TIME: Oregon State, which has not played in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in recent years, last outing was the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Hawaii Feb. 11-13. The Beavers finished 16th in the tournament at 944. John Lepak was OSU's top individual, finishing tied for 16th at 229 (69-83-77).
