Women's Golf Qualifies for NCAA Finals
STANFORD, Calif. -- The Oregon State women's golf team has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time ever. The Beavers finished tied for 10th with rival Oregon and will advance to championships May 20-23 in Madison, Wisc.
"To say the team is excited would be a huge understatement," Beaver Head Coach Rise' Lakowske said. "There was a lot of hugging, crying and jumping around when we learned we had made it. I'm really proud of this team
The Beavers shot a final round 311 on a windy Stanford Golf Course. The team finished at 912. The top 11 teams advance to the NCAA Tournament.
"The score could have been better, but it also could have been worse," Lakowske said. "We played pretty steady, made some pars, and when we got into trouble, we didn't make it worse than it was. We played smart."
The lowest score for the final round was 296, turned in by Arizona State and Tulsa. Oklahoma State, which was in third after two rounds, fell all the way to 13th. Seven Pac-10 teams qualified for the finals.
Grace Park of Arizona State won the individual title at 7-under-212. Arizona won the team title by 15 shots at 871.
Kathleen Takaishi led OSU, by finishing tied for 15th at 3-over-222. Anjeanette Dabbs tied for 30th at 227; Anne Brooksby tied for 50th at 231; Carina Olsson tied for 64th at 233; and Rachel Borcherts tied for 81st at 239. Brooksby, a true-freshman, had two birdies for her round.
"I told the team if they qualified I would get my right ear pierced," Lakowske said. "I will be sporting a new earring next week."
The team will now prepare for the 72-hole NCAA Championships at the University Ridge Golf Course. A total of 99 participants will compete at the par 72, 6,033 yards course. Nineteen teams plus four individuals will comprise the championships.
