December 4, 1998
Sean Deacon of Scottsdale, Ariz., has signed a national letter of intent to play mens golf at Oregon State University, it was announced Friday by Beaver Head Coach Mike Ketcham.
Deacon, whose older brother Todd is a current member of the OSU golf team, finished second in the 4A state tournament in November for Saguaro High School. Deacon shot rounds of 71 and 74 for a 145 total. He also captured fourth in the prep regionals.
"The opportunity to play with my brother and Coach Ketcham were the deciding factors for me on selecting Oregon State University," Deacon said.
Deacon was a four-year letterman at Saguaro. He earned first team all-state recognition this season, and was a three-time second team all-state pick.
"Sean is not only very talented athletically, he is talented academically," Ketcham said. "He is among the top 10 percent in his class. We are very excited about him joining our program."
Deacon had five top-three finishes in tournaments held during the summer, including capturing medalist honors at the Junior World Qualifier, where he shot a 65, and at the Maxfli Qualifier.
"I consider my accuracy, short game, and putting and chipping as my strengths," Deacon added.
Deacon was also considering Arizona, Arizona State, Texas A&M, and Colorado State.
