Men's Golf Rallies to Finish Second at Pacific
September 22, 1998
Copperopolis, Cal. -
The Oregon State mens golf team shot rounds of 284 and 281 over the final 36 holes to finish second at the 18-team Pacific Invitational. The Beavers concluded the tournament, which was held at the Saddle Creek Country Club, with a three-round total of 855.
Oregon State was ninth after the first round, but recorded the second-best score for the third round to pass five teams and finish second behind North Texas. The placing was especially beneficial to Oregon State as it finished ahead of other teams within its District.
Junior Eric Dahm led OSUs charge in the final round with a career-low 5-under-par 67. Dahm bettered his best collegiate round ever by four shots, and the 67 tied for the sixth-lowest round in OSU history. Dahms teammates Dustin Wayne and Justin Johnson also had rounds of 70 over the final 18.
Dahm ended the tournament as the highest finisher for OSU, placing tied for 11th at 4-under-212. John Lepak and Wayne tied for 19th at 215; Anthony Arvidson tied for 40th at 219; and Johnson tied for 48th at 221. Wayne played the final 36 holes 7-under par, which also included a 67 in the second round.
"Im really proud of the way the team played the final 36 holes," Beaver Head Coach Mike Ketcham said. "I think we saw glimpses of what this team is capable of doing. I look for us to build on this as we prepare for the rest of the season."
North Texas won the team title at 838, while the University of The Pacifics Jason Preeo captured the individual title at 205. Preeo shot rounds of 67 and 66 over the first 36 holes.
