Softball Defeats Southern Utah, Cal Poly SLO at UNLV Classic
February 19, 1999
LAS VEGAS - The Oregon State softball team completed the first day of competition at the UNLV Softball Classic with a 3-0 win over Southern Utah and a 5-2 win over Cal Poly SLO.
Crystal Draper threw a two-hitter and struck out 14 batters en route to the shutout against Southern Utah, while Tarrah Beyster and Jenni Jodoin both homered in the win over Cal Poly SLO.
Draper improved to 3-2 with the win, her second shutout of the season. Her 14 Ks tied the school record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game.
"Crystal has struggled, but she was able to work through it," said coach Kirk Walker. "She kept them off-balance enough that they were never able to put on a major attack."
Beyster led off the second inning against Southern Utah with a base hit, and freshman Alicia Seymour came in as a pinch runner. Senior Kelli Kranz walked, and Jodoin sacrificed the runners over to second and third. Heather Chinn's base hit then scored Seymour to put the Beavers on top.
In the game against Cal Poly SLO, the Beavers got on the board early with three runs in the first inning, highlighted by Jodoin's two-run shot to right centerfield.
Jodi Chmielewski went 3-6 with a double on the day as she moved closer to becoming OSUs all-time hits leader. Chmielewski has 160 hits on her career, one shy of tying Amy Warner's school record of 161 from 1994-97.
Beyster was 3-7 for the two games, with two RBI and two runs to go along with her third home run of the season. Shawna Feldt also went 3-7, while Chinn went 1-1 with two RBI in the opening game and was 1-4 with a double in the second game.
"We played much better in the second game. We had a very balanced attack throughout the team and off the bench," Walker said. "We didn't play extremely well (against Southern Utah) but it's always nice to win even when you're not playing your best."
Beyster went the distance against Cal Poly SLO to improve to 4-1 on the season. She allowed seven hits and struck out four.
"Tarrah pitched a nice ballgame, although she gave up a few more hits than she probably should have," Walker said. "Overall, it was a good first day of the tournament. I'm looking for us to play better tomorrow."
Oregon State (7-3) continues play at the UNLV Classic on Saturday, Feb. 20 when the Beavers play Wisconsin at 10 a.m. and Loyola Marymount at 5:30 p.m.
