Oregon State Pounds St. Martin's, 22-4
March 13, 1998
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State scored nine runs in the fourth inning and tacked on eight more in the seventh Friday afternoon as the Beavers beat St. Martin's 22-4 in non-league baseball at Coleman Field. Troy Schader was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four runs batted in for the Beavers (9-5-1) as they posted a season-high for runs scored and won their third straight.
OSU and St. Martin's (3-6) continue their weekend series with single games at 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Coleman Field.
"I thought we did a little better job playing the game as a whole," said OSU coach Pat Casey, who hadn't been pleased with the Beavers' 7-2 win over Portland on Wednesday. "We just needed to come out and play."
Brody Percell got the win for OSU, evening his record at 2-2 as he went five innings with six hits, three runs (all earned), no walks and four strikeouts.
"Brody could have thrown better, but he was pitching on four days' rest," Casey said of Percell, who had beaten Southern California on Sunday. "He came and battled."
Hal Ranstad and freshmen Don Stykel and Jeremy Rankin also pitched for OSU as it tried to give some members of the bullpen a bit of work.
"We've got some guys who are going to help us in the future, and could help us this year," Casey said. "But they've got to pitch some innings."
Beaver first baseman Matt Bailie continued his string of at least one hit in every game this season by going 2-for-4 and driving in a pair of runs. Bailie extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an infield single in the sixth inning, then singled again in the seventh to drive in a pair of runs.
OSU led just 3-2 before cutting loose for nine runs on eight hits in the fourth inning. Schader had a two-run double and Ben Bertrand and Joe Gerber added two-run singles in the inning.
Schader added his two-run homer to left-center field in the sixth inning. In OSU's eight-run seventh, Drew Hedges capped the scoring with a grand slam to left. The home runs were the first of the season for both Schader and Hedges.
