OSU set for final non-league games
September 29, 1998
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 30
Oregon State at Idaho, 3 p.m.
FRIDAY, OCT. 2
Oregon State vs. Montana at Pullman, Wash., 1 p.m.
Oregon State (4-4-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) plays its final games before the start of the Pacific-10 season, going on the road to play at Idaho (3-3-1) and then meeting Montana (6-3-0) in a game that will be played in Pullman, Wash.
"These are 2 games on the road which may provide very different challenges," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Everybody is keen to go back and play Montana after last year (a 10-0 OSU loss in Missoula). That will be a tough game, and Montana has had a very strong program in recent years. It will be a chance for us to step up and prepare for the Pac-10 season against a strong team."
First, though, comes the game at Idaho.
"We've got to play with confidence and get a result," Fennah said.
Crucial to the Beavers' hopes in both games will be eliminating the spells of poor play that have bothered OSU this fall.
"That's still a big problem," Fennah said. "I like the way we work; there's nobody out there who isn't working hard all the time for us to be successful. But, from time to time, we don't take care of things that we are capable of."
The Beavers would also like to get on the board a bit earlier. OSU has been outscored 8-1 in the first half this season, then come back to outscore opponents 10-3 in the second half.
"It'd be nice to get a goal early," Fennah said. "We seem to settle down a bit after we've gotten a goal."
Idaho is on a 4-game losing streak, with last week's losses coming at home by scores of 1-0 to Cal-Santa Barbara and 6-0 to Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.
Freshman forward Megan Cummings leads the Vandals in scoring with 11 points on 4 goals and 3 assists, while sophomore forward Andrea Lee has 8 points on 3 goals and 2 assists. Freshman goalkeeper Tricia Haynes has a goals-against average of 1.78 and 2 shutouts.
Montana split its games last week, losing 4-2 at Utah and winning 4-1 at Brigham Young.
Montana's leading scorers have been senior forward Sara Overgaag, with 10 points on 3 goals and 4 assists, and freshman forward/midfielder Heather Olson, with 10 points on 5 goals. The Grizzlies have split goalkeeping duties, with sophomore Natalie Hiller posting a 1.40 GAA and 1 shutout and junior Amy Bemis recording a 1.57 GAA.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: This will be the first meeting between Oregon State and Idaho.
OSU is 2-2-0 in the all-time series against Montana and is on a 2-game losing streak against the Grizzlies. Montana took a 10-0 victory last season in Missoula, handing OSU the worst loss in its women's varsity soccer history. The Beavers' last win was 3-1 in Corvallis in 1995.
That's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: OSU could be without 3 players for this week's games. Freshman midfielder Leila Kaady is suffering from mononucleosis and is out for this week; junior midfielder Beth Thomason is probable with an ankle injury suffered in the Sept. 26 game against Eastern Washington; and junior midfielder Aubrey Robbins is probable with sore ribs suffered during the Sept. 26 game against Eastern Washington. OSU goes 2-1 during a week full of home games
LAST WEEK: Oregon State dropped a disappointing game, then bounced back to post a pair of shutouts last week.
The Beavers were beaten 1-0 by Portland State on Sept. 23, allowing a goal in the second minute and then spending the rest of the afternoon trying to score the equalizer.
OSU came back and beat Eastern Washington 2-0 on Sept. 26, with junior forward Sunny Miller scoring both goals in the second half. Freshman forward Rebecca Remmel earned her first collegiate points with 2 assists and senior forward Lindy Brown also earned an assist for the Beavers.
Oregon State made it a weekend sweep on Sept. 27 with a 1-0 win over Idaho State. Freshman forward BreeAnna Jolin scored her first collegiate goal off an assist by Miller in the 72nd minute.
The back-to-back wins were OSU's first since a 3-game winning streak over Portland State, Fresno State and Cal State-Sacramento from Sept. 22-29, 1996. The wins also marked OSU's first consecutive shutouts since blanking Arkansas and California by 2-0 scores on Oct. 9-13, 1995.
Nothing could be Fennah
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH STEVE FENNAH: Steve Fennah has a 4-4-0 record in his first season as Oregon State's head coach. He spent the past 5 years at Jesuit High in Beaverton, Ore. Fennah guided Jesuit to 4 straight Oregon Class 4A state titles in his final 4 seasons at the school. After leading the Crusaders to an 84-2-6 record and top-8 national rankings in each of his 5 seasons at Jesuit, he was named head coach at OSU on Feb. 6, 1998.

BEAVER NEWCOMERS: Besides having a new head coach this fall, Oregon State also has plenty of new players. Of the 23 players on this fall's roster, 11 weren't on the 1997 Beaver roster. The newcomers include 8 freshmen and 3 transfers from 4-year colleges.
That's pretty rank
NATIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS: Oregon State can look ahead to this fall's schedule and find 2 games against teams ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll this week. The Beavers play at 18th-ranked UCLA on Oct. 25 and at 15th-ranked Stanford on Nov. 6. OSU also played a team that received votes this week but was not ranked: OSU lost 5-1 to Cal-Irvine on Sept. 5.
Taking the local
OSU'S MID-VALLEY PLAYERS: Oregon State didn't have to look far to fill many of its roster spots. There are 4 Beavers who played at nearby high schools: junior forward Sunny Miller (Crescent Valley), junior midfielder Aubrey Robbins (Philomath), sophomore defender Libby Christensen (Corvallis) and sophomore goalkeeper Wendy Matson (Philomath).
Lindy hops a few spots on OSU lists
LINDY BROWN: Senior forward Lindy Brown (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) continues to move up Oregon State's career lists in scoring, goals and assists. After tallying an assist against Eastern Washington on Sept. 26, Brown moved into a tie for sixth place on OSU's career scoring list with 43 points and moved into sole possession of sixth place on the school's career assists list with 13. She remains seventh on OSU's career goals list with 15. Brown started the season quickly, getting 2 goals and 2 assists in OSU's 2 games at the Cal State-Fullerton Tournament. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Brown is tied for third in assists with 3, tied for eighth in scoring with 9 points, and tied for 10th in goals with 3.
Miller time
SUNNY MILLER: Junior forward Sunny Miller (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley HS) has started realizing her potential as a scorer early this season. After scoring 5 points in her last 2 games, Miller leads the Beavers in scoring with 11 points on 5 goals and 1 assist and also leads the team in goals. Most recently, she scored both Beaver goals in a win over Eastern Washington on Sept. 26. She also had a pair of goals in a Sept. 7 win at Cal State-Fullerton, a goal in the Sept. 18 win over Gonzaga, and an assist in the Sept. 27 win over Idaho State. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Miller is tied for fifth in goals with 5 and sixth in scoring with 11 points.

FIRST HALF/SECOND HALF DIFFERENCE: Oregon State would love it if the Beavers could figure out a way to start every game at halftime. So far this season, OSU has been outscored 8-1 in the first half. The Beavers have come back strong, though, and outscored their opponents 10-3 in the second half.
Let's put an end to it
STOPPING NEGATIVE STREAKS: Oregon State has terminated some rather lengthy, rather unpleasant streaks already this season.
OSU beat Eastern Washington 2-0 on Sept. 26 and Idaho State 1-0 on Sept. 27. 9-13, 1995.
The Beavers' 4-1 win at Cal State-Fullerton on Sept. 7 ended a 14-game winless streak; OSU had recorded 13 losses and 1 tie since beating Eastern Washington 6-0 at home on Sept. 27, 1997. It also ended a 15-game winless streak in road contests; the Beavers hadn't won on an opponent's home field since a 3-1 victory at Arizona on Sept. 29, 1995 (OSU had managed wins on neutral fields during that time). OSU made the most of its scoring chances against the Titans. The Beavers were outshot 18-5, but scored on their first 4 shots to overcome a 1-0 deficit.
Home improvement
LORENZ FIELD AT VALLEY STADIUM: Oregon State's soccer facility, Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium, provides soccer enthusiasts with one of the top places to both play and watch the sport on the West Coast.
The main seating section, located on the west sideline, has a capacity of approximately 1,000. It rises well above field level and puts most fans near midfield to get a better picture of what is happening on the pitch.
This fall, the media and statistics crews will also enjoy a better vantage point as they begin using the press box behind the back row of the west sideline seats.
Smaller sections of seats and standing room areas now circle the rest of the field, bringing capacity to approximately 1,500.
OSU is 7-14-0 at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, which opened for the 1996 season.
The stadium is located a block southeast of Parker Stadium, just south of the intersection of 17th Street and Western Boulevard.
Leave it to Beavers
OSU ON TELEVISION: Oregon State will have 1 of its games this fall televised on Fox Sports Northwest. The Nov. 1 home game against Arizona will be shown on a tape-delay basis at a time to be announced on Nov. 2.
