Women's Basketball Posts 69-52 Victory over Long Beach State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's basketball team (7-1) won its sixth straight game with a 69-52 victory over Long Beach State (3-4) Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers broke away from a 28-28 halftime tie with a strong second-half showing. Sissel Pierce hit four consecutive field goals as OSU opened up the second half on an 8-0 run. The 49ers managed to stop the Beaver run with a free throw at the 15:28 mark, but they didn't score a second half field goal until Kesha Wade hit one at the 13:28 mark.
Oregon State shot .625 (15-24) in the second half, while Long Beach made only six field goals on .273 shooting after the break.
Neither team had strong shooting in the first half. OSU shot .320 (8-25) and Long Beach shot .344 (11-32), and both teams committed 13 turnovers in the opening half. Both OSU and LBSU had three turnovers in the first three minutes of the game, and the first three shots of the game (two by Long Beach and one by OSU) were blocked. Neither team scored until the 16:29 mark, when Pierce's layup gave the Beavers the early 2-0 lead.
OSU had a 28-23 lead with 28 seconds remaining in the first half, but Charel Bailey hit a jumper at the 27.2 mark and Chelsea Cooper's three-pointer tied the game at the buzzer.
Pierce finished with a game-high 16 points, 12 of which came in the second half. She hit all seven of her field goal attempts and was 2-2 from the free throw line. She also added two blocked shots, four rebounds and a steal in the victory.
Chassie Wiersma scored 10 points, all in the first half, and she added a game-best five steals. Vanessa Morris added 12 points, and Ericka Brosterhous came in off the bench to score nine for OSU.
Bailey and Rhonda Smith led the 49ers with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Smith added a game-high 10 rebounds for the game's only double-double.
The Beavers return to action Friday, December 18 when they travel to Portland State for a 7:00 p.m. game with the Vikings.
