Beavers go to Oregon for Pac-10 opener
October 6, 1998
FRIDAY, OCT. 9
Oregon State at Oregon, 3 p.m.
Oregon State (5-4-1 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) has been getting consistently good results as the Beavers move into Pacific-10 play. OSU takes a 4-game unbeaten streak to Oregon (3-3-2) for the third women's soccer Civil War, and the Beavers have a 4 wins and 1 tie in their past 6 games.
"It's a very important game, obviously," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "This game has a lot hanging on it ... it's the first conference game, and OSU has never beaten the Ducks. That's a motivation for our team.
"We feel good about ourselves after getting some results the past 2 weeks. We've developed some consistency in our play and we're hoping to get some people back."
OSU's current unbeaten streak is the Beavers' longest since a 6-game winning streak near the end of the 1995 season. The Beavers are hoping to regain the services of Beth Thomason and Aubrey Robbins, who missed last week's games with injuries, and Leila Kaady, who missed the trip because of illness.
Fennah sees the key to Friday's game as being how well Oregon State defends against Oregon.
"They're a team that plays very direct soccer," Fennah said. "If we do a good job of defending that, it will give us the opportunity to hit them on the counter a bit."
Oregon has literally been fit to be tied lately, as the Ducks have finished their last 2 games deadlocked. Playing at home last weekend, Oregon tied San Francisco 1-1 on Friday and then tied Portland State 1-1 on Saturday.
"The Ducks are off to a good start and they're also playing well," Fennah said. "It will be an interesting game."
Freshman forward/midfielder Chalise Baysa leads the Ducks with 12 points on 6 goals, while junior forward Erin Anderson has 5 points on 1 goal and 3 assists. Junior goalkeeper Amanda Fox has a goals-against average of 1.15 and 2 shutouts.
Oregon State and Oregon have a common opponent this season. Oregon tied Portland State 1-1 on Oct. 3 in Eugene, while Oregon State lost to PSU 1-0 on Sept. 23 in Corvallis.
It's history
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: OSU is 0-2-0 in the all-time series against Oregon. The Beavers lost 3-1 last season in Corvallis, with the now-graduated Lindsay Allori scoring OSU's goal off an assist by Sunny Miller.
That's gotta hurt
INJURY REPORT: OSU could regain the services of 3 players this week. Junior midfielder Beth Thomason (ankle injury), junior midfielder Aubrey Robbins (sore ribs) and freshman midfielder Leila Kaady (mononucleosis) are all listed as probable for the game at Oregon. None of the 3 played in last week's games against Idaho and Montana. OSU gets a shutout, then a somewhat satisfying tie
LAST WEEK: Oregon State went unbeaten in 2 games on its trip to the Palouse country, winning 2-0 at Idaho on Sept. 30 and tying Montana 1-1 on Oct. 2 in a game played at Pullman, Wash.
Lindy Brown scored both OSU goals at Idaho, and both came in the first 13 minutes of play; Ann Marie Fallow assisted on the second tally. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease recorded her third straight shutout. The victory gave the Beavers a 3-game winning streak, their longest since beating Portland State, Fresno State and Cal State-Sacramento from Sept. 22-29, 1996; the 3 straight shutouts were the most for OSU since the Beavers posted 5 straight in the middle of the 1993 season.
OSU's tie with Montana at least partially avenged last season's 10-0 loss to the Grizzlies. The Beavers might have come home with a weekend sweep if Montana hadn't been awarded a first-half penalty kick. OSU tied the score in the 56th minute when Jona Maukonen scored off an assist by Brown. The Beavers stayed even despite being outshot 31-8, and Pease had 16 saves.
Nothing could be Fennah
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH STEVE FENNAH: Steve Fennah has a 5-4-1 record in his first season as Oregon State's head coach. He spent the past 5 years at Jesuit High in Beaverton, Ore. Fennah guided Jesuit to 4 straight Oregon Class 4A state titles in his final 4 seasons at the school. After leading the Crusaders to an 84-2-6 record and top-8 national rankings in each of his 5 seasons at Jesuit, he was named head coach at OSU on Feb. 6, 1998.

BEAVER NEWCOMERS: Besides having a new head coach this fall, Oregon State also has plenty of new players. Of the 23 players on this fall's roster, 11 weren't on the 1997 Beaver roster. The newcomers include 8 freshmen and 3 transfers from 4-year colleges.
That's pretty rank
NATIONALLY-RANKED OPPONENTS: Oregon State can look ahead to this fall's schedule and find 2 games against teams ranked in the Oct. 5 National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The Beavers play at 20th-ranked UCLA on Oct. 25 and at 9th-ranked Stanford on Nov. 6.
Taking the local
OSU'S MID-VALLEY PLAYERS: Oregon State didn't have to look far to fill many of its roster spots. There are 4 Beavers who played at nearby high schools: junior forward Sunny Miller (Crescent Valley), junior midfielder Aubrey Robbins (Philomath), sophomore defender Libby Christensen (Corvallis) and sophomore goalkeeper Wendy Matson (Philomath).
Lindy hops a few spots on OSU lists
LINDY BROWN: Senior forward Lindy Brown (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) continues to move up Oregon State's career lists in scoring, goals and assists. She went on a scoring binge against Idaho and Montana, scoring 2 goals against the Vandals and picking up an assist against the Grizzlies. That moved her into the top 5 on OSU's list of career scoring leaders with 48 points on 17 goals and 14 assists. Brown is now tied for fifth in career assists and tied for sixth in career goals on the school's all-time lists. Brown started the season quickly, getting 2 goals and 2 assists in OSU's 2 games at the Cal State-Fullerton Tournament. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Brown is tied for fourth in scoring, tied for seventh in goals scored and tied for third in assists.
Miller time
SUNNY MILLER: Junior forward Sunny Miller (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley HS) has started realizing her potential as a scorer early this season. Miller is second on the team in scoring with 11 points on 5 goals and 1 assist and is tied for the team lead in goals. Most recently, she scored both Beaver goals in a win over Eastern Washington on Sept. 26. She also had a pair of goals in a Sept. 7 win at Cal State-Fullerton, a goal in the Sept. 18 win over Gonzaga, and an assist in the Sept. 27 win over Idaho State. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Miller is 10th in scoring and tied for seventh in goals.
Pease, thank you
ELIZABETH PEASE: Sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis HS) has been a big part of Oregon State's early-season success. She has 3 shutouts already this season, blanking Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Idaho in consecutive games from Sept. 26-30. That helped Pease put together a string of 388 scoreless minutes that spanned parts of 5 games. She missed a fourth shutout by only 8 minutes when backup Wendy Matson got some playing time in a 3-0 win over Gonzaga on Sept 18. Pease also came up big against Montana on Oct. 2, making 16 saves in a 1-1 tie. Among the Pacific-10 leaders this week, Pease is sixth in goals-against average at 1.26 and third in saves with 52.

FIRST HALF/SECOND HALF DIFFERENCE: Oregon State would love it if the Beavers could figure out a way to start every game at halftime. So far this season, OSU has been outscored 11-5 in the first half. The Beavers have come back strong, though, and outscored their opponents 9-2 in the second half and overtime.
Let's put an end to it
STOPPING NEGATIVE STREAKS: Oregon State has terminated some rather lengthy, rather unpleasant streaks already this season.
OSU beat Eastern Washington 2-0 on Sept. 26 and Idaho State 1-0 on Sept. 27. The back-to-back wins were OSU's first since a 3-game winning streak over Portland State, Fresno State and Cal State-Sacramento from Sept. 22-29, 1996. The wins also marked OSU's first consecutive shutouts since blanking Arkansas and California by 2-0 scores on Oct. 9-13, 1995.
OSU extended its winning streak and shutout streak to 3 with a 2-0 win at Idaho on Sept. 30; OSU hadn't posted 3 straight shutouts since the Beavers had 5 in a row in the middle of the 1993 season.
The Beavers' 4-1 win at Cal State-Fullerton on Sept. 7 ended a 14-game winless streak; OSU had recorded 13 losses and 1 tie since beating Eastern Washington 6-0 at home on Sept. 27, 1997. It also ended a 15-game winless streak in road contests; the Beavers hadn't won on an opponent's home field since a 3-1 victory at Arizona on Sept. 29, 1995 (OSU had managed wins on neutral fields during that time). OSU made the most of its scoring chances against the Titans. The Beavers were outshot 18-5, but scored on their first 4 shots to overcome a 1-0 deficit.
Home improvement
LORENZ FIELD AT VALLEY STADIUM: Oregon State's soccer facility, Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium, provides soccer enthusiasts with one of the top places to both play and watch the sport on the West Coast.
OSU is 7-14-0 at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, which opened for the 1996 season.
The stadium is located a block southeast of Parker Stadium, just south of the intersection of 17th Street and Western Boulevard.
Leave it to Beavers
OSU ON TELEVISION: Oregon State will have 1 of its games this fall televised on Fox Sports Northwest. The Nov. 1 home game against Arizona will be shown on a tape-delay basis at a time to be announced on Nov. 2.
