Oregon State Swimmers in Ninth After Opening Day of Pacific-10 Meet
February 26, 1999
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Oregon State put seven new entries on its all-time womens swimming top 10 lists Thursday as the Pacific-10 Championships got underway at the Weyerhaeuser/King County Aquatic Center. The Beavers finished the day in ninth place with 84 points; Stanford is first with 485 points.
"We had a lot of lifetime bests, and our relays were awesome," OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny said. "This is an extremely fast meet, a lot faster than it was last year."
OSU didnt place a swimmer in any of the three individual event finals Thursday. The closest to making a final was Arianna Higuera in the 50-yard freestyle, as her time of 24.09 seconds missed by just .04 of a second. Her time was good enough to move her up one spot to fourth on OSUs list of all-time leaders in that event.
Bonnie Renwick also improved on OSUs all-time list in the 50 freestyle, jumping to sixth from 10th with her mark of 24.42 seconds.
Kyle Bond jumped onto the schools list of all-time leaders in the 200 individual medley in fourth place with her time of 2:09.40, a career-best by five seconds. Sarah Cohen improved her fifth-place time on OSUs 200 IM list with a mark of 2:10.96 and Kristen Severance improved from eighth place to sixth with a mark of 2:10.97.
In the 500 freestyle, Amy Imwalle climbed two spots to fifth place on OSUs all-time list with a mark of 5:06.95. Dana Stoddard moved up one spot to ninth with her clocking of 5:10.82.
With half of OSUs squad consisting of freshman, Thursdays competition was an eye-opener.
"Theyre doing well getting in the blocks and racing," Podkoscielny said of Oregon States newcomers. "But the freshmen are looking around the pool deck and seeing all the big names from the Olympic team and people swimming extremely fast. Its a great experience for them.
"Today is traditionally not our strong day - theres only three individual events. Were looking forward to Friday and Saturday and putting a lot of people in the finals and having a great next two days."
