Kummernes, Howes Get Records as Oregon State Men Take 4-2 Soccer Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Frederik Kummernes and Greg Howes had record-setting assists as Oregon State beat Cal State-Sacramento 4-2 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation mens soccer Friday afternoon. Kummernes assist was the 18th of his career, tying the school career record; Howes had his eighth and ninth of this season, setting a school single-season mark.
Kummernes and Howes also scored goals for Oregon State (3-5 MPSF, 7-9-1 overall), which closes out its 1998 campaign at third-ranked UCLA at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Beavers got on the board in the 20th minute when Kummernes crossed a ball to Greg Howes, who then kicked it to the far post for the goal.
Twenty minutes later Cal State-Sacramento (0-7-1, 0-15-2) allowed James Albert to lob a ball passed to him by Howes over its goalkeeper, Ryan Duncan, to put the Beavers up 2-0 at the half.
"We played better toward the end of the first half," said OSU head coach Jimmy Conway. "It got a bit sloppy in the second half."
In that second half Albert scored again off assists from Howes and Ben Roth. With one goal and two assists Friday, Howes in now tied for 10th on OSUs single-season scoring list with 17 points. He also tied for seventh on the career assists list with nine.
CSUS broke the Beaver shutout when Rene Schmidt scored in the 59th minute.
Kummernes put his name under the goal category when he drilled a corner kick toward the far post and off the goalie to put the Beavers up by three again. Kummernes is now tied for fourth on the school career goals list with 18.
The Hornets added one more goal when Brandon Henley scored off reserve Beaver goalkeeper Jake Smith, who saw his first action of the season.
