Softball Defeats No. 11 Texas
March 19, 1999
FULLERTON, Calif. - Kim Herman homered to help lift the No. 12 Oregon State softball team to a 2-1 victory over No. 11 Texas at the Kia Klassic on Friday.
Herman hit the solo home run in the second inning to give the Beavers (22-6) a 1-0 lead. OSU added another run in the fifth, and Texas (18-10) scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Longhorns threatened in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back hits to lead off the inning. Crystal Draper then came in to pitch for Tarrah Beyster and retired the next three batters for the save.
Beyster improved to 13-3 after giving up just four hits and striking out seven Texas batters in six innings of work. Draper, who had one strikeout, picked up her first save of the year.
The Beavers, who struggled offensively in the first day of Kia Klassic action, picked up eight hits for the game. Beyster and Kelli Kranz went 2-3, while Jenni Jodoin was 1-1 with two walks. Herman, Shawna Feldt and Jodi Chmielewski also had one hit apiece.
Oregon State finished pool play with a 1-2 record and advanced into bracket play as the third seed from its pool. As a result, the Beavers will play No. 2 Arizona, the second seed from pool "D", at 11a.m., Saturday, March 20.
The Beavers will then play either Arizona State or Florida at 7 p.m. Saturday night. If OSU defeats Arizona, the Beavers will play the winner of the game between the Sun Devils and Gators; OSU will play the loser of that game if the Beavers fall to the Wildcats.
